Job Description :

The Director of Student Affairs provides strategic direction and operational oversight specific to student affairs within the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM). The Director is responsible for planning and implementing social, cultural and recreational activities of student groups. The Director has oversight of student affairs related activities, including but not limited to new and current student orientation; white coat ceremony; student success and retention; student organizations; current student advisement. The Director works closely with the Director of Admissions to develop processes to optimize efficient matriculation, orientation, retention and student success. Provides input to key student-serving functions such as advising; student services; and records management. The Director provides leadership and administration for the office including staff supervision, and assessment of programs and services designed to foster student success.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and administration for ICOM Office of Student Affairs to include planning, fiscal management, and student policies, while ensuring student needs and accreditation standards are met
  • Plan and implement strategies designed to improve student success: orientation, student leadership activities, student organizations, and scholarship activities
  • Serve as a liaison between the student body, faculty and administration on matters affecting students, and act as an advocate for students
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the medical school's mission and objectives to include, but not limited to:
    • Advising students, academic probation and/or termination, honor code violations, other disciplinary matters, disability issues, and graduation
    • Assisting in administrative matters such as academic record procedures (in cooperation with the Registrar), periodic updates and publication of the Student Handbook, facilitation of communication with students, and assist in the preparation of the Dean's Letters
    • Oversee Student Life, such as student events and programs, first-year orientation, student organizations, and student web pages
    • Gather data, conduct program assessment, compile information, and prepare and present reports
    • Make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments
    • Work and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
    • Read, understand, follow, enforce and interpret complex regulations, policies, and procedures
    • Manage budgets including determining costs, allocations, expenditures, and monitor processes for multiple units with various types of budget sources
    • Work as a team member, fostering a cooperative work environment, and perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervises the Student Affairs Coordinator and all regular classified and temporary hourly staff under his/her direction

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, or relevant field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in higher education administration, preferably in a medical school setting.
  • Training and experience serving in an academic management position in an institute of higher education/medical education.
  • Experience and demonstrated abilities for working in an academic setting.
  • A team player who values collaboration, mutual support and team cohesion
  • Must be proficient in word processing and computer usage experience
  • Expertise in negotiation
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels
  • Ability to prepare program proposals and academic evaluative reports
  • Ability to listen and communicate positively to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees, and the public
  • Ability to collaborate and interact with health care professionals
  • Ability to organize, direct, prioritizes, and delegate work appropriately
  • Ability to manage time well, work under stressful conditions with an even temperament, and respond calmly and appropriately in emotional situations
  • The Director is an effective leader with a strong vision for facilitating support services for the student population of the school of medicine, an excellent communicator, and a problem solver
