We are seeking a visionary and hands-on Director of Software Engineering to lead our embedded systems and application software teams in the design, development, and deployment of secure, scalable, and high-performance drone platforms. This role will drive cross-functional collaboration across firmware, embedded Linux, autonomy systems, and ground control software. You will be instrumental in shaping the software strategy, architecture, and execution roadmap that supports Teal Drones's next generation of autonomous aerial systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and manage multiple software engineering teams across embedded systems, autonomy, and application layers.
- Define and execute the software development roadmap aligned with company goals and product timelines.
- Guide hiring, talent development, and organizational growth within the software department.
- Partner with Product, Hardware, QA, and Operations to ensure seamless integration of software into UAS Systems.
- Oversee architecture and implementation of real-time, embedded Linux systems and autonomy algorithms.
- Ensure compliance with cybersecurity standards, including ITAR, NDAA, and DO-178C requirements where applicable.
- Mentor engineering leaders and foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and accountability.
- Own software KPIs: velocity, quality, reliability, and technical debt management.
- Represent the software team in executive planning, stakeholder, and strategic partner meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications -
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Deep expertise in embedded Linux, C/C++, autonomy, and real-time systems.
- Proven experience in delivering software for UAS, robotics, or aerospace platforms.
- Strong understanding of software security, DevSecOps, and mission-critical systems.
- Experience with Yocto, NVIDIA Jetson, Qualcomm chipsets, or similar edge compute platforms is a plus.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum, modern software lifecycle management, and version control systems (Git).
- Ability to obtain U.S. Security Clearance and/or handle ITAR-controlled technology.
Additional Desired Qualifications -
- Prior experience working in a startup or scaling environment.
- Hands-on experience with PX4, MAVLink, ROS, or similar flight stacks preferred.
- Experience managing distributed or hybrid engineering teams.
- Background in machine learning, CV, or sensor fusion for autonomous systems.
- Working knowledge of compliance standards like NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, or ISO 27001.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions -
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to operate a computer, keyboard, and mouse with precision for extended periods.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal form.
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting of equipment or hardware up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to travel occasionally for team meetings, partner engagements, or product testing, potentially including drone flight operations in varied environments.
- Must possess the visual acuity to read technical documentation, inspect hardware, and work with small electronic components when needed.
- Capable of working in a lab or light manufacturing environment with appropriate safety measures in place, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE) if required.
