Develops laboratory operating procedures. Manages budget planning process. Provides direction and supervision to laboratory staff. Contributes to the scientific direction of the laboratory in partnership with Principal Investigator. Expected to maintain extensive knowledge and expertise in respective discipline.

Summary

The Department of Structural Biology at St Jude's is hiring a Director for the Single-Molecule Imaging Center (SMC) to lead a diverse team. The candidate should have extensive experience with single-molecule fluorescence microscopy and technical expertise in hardware and software solutions, including teaching and knowledge dissemination.

The mission of the SMC is to advance single-molecule methods and make these technologies accessible to a broad scientific community within and outside the institution. The center utilizes advanced confocal, TIRFM, live-cell imaging microscopes, and integrated software, with support for custom hardware and high-performance computing.

Technologies in the SMC have enabled discoveries across various biological systems, including CFTR, GPCRs, ribosomes, viral particles, and more. The center collaborates with leading laboratories and has access to cutting-edge fluorophore and non-natural amino acid technologies.

The successful candidate will guide collaborations to achieve single-molecule resolution across clinically relevant biological systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily center operations, ensuring efficient staffing, instrument functionality, and data management.
  • Plan and implement next-generation imaging instruments and strategies.
  • Develop and oversee software tools for instrument control, data analysis, and project management.
  • Lead collaborations to leverage single-molecule imaging for biological research.
  • Drive internal projects to advance imaging technology, surface chemistry, fluorophores, and software.
  • Establish policies to maximize resource productivity and instrument performance.
  • Manage SMC staff with diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Participate in seminars, conferences, and recruitment efforts.
  • Ideal Candidate:

  • Ph.D. in physical sciences with 10+ years of post-graduate experience.
  • Strong publication record in single-molecule imaging applications.
  • Experience building custom single-molecule microscopes.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, C++.
  • Minimum Education and/or Training:

    • Bachelor's degree required.

    Minimum Experience:

    • 10 years of relevant experience with a Ph.D., 8 years with a Master's, 6 years with a Bachelor's.
    • Management experience required.

    Additional Information:

    Memphis offers a vibrant city life, low cost of living, and no personal income tax. The estimated salary range for this role is $114,400 - $216,320 annually.
