Job Summary: Gurney's Montauk is seeking a highly experienced and hands-on, Director of Engineering to lead all aspects of property and infrastructure maintenance, emergency repairs and CapEx management. This individual will be responsible for leading and managing Gurney's Engineering team and is responsible for the resort's HVAC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, preventative maintenance, facilities operations and maintenance for employee housing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage and develop the Engineering team across all disciplines: MEP, HVAC and general maintenance.
- Oversee daily operations and long-term planning for all physical plant in guest rooms and guest facing areas, spa, indoor and outdoor pools, commercial kitchens and employee housing.
- Design and implement a preventative maintenance program for guest rooms, back-of-house and common areas.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and safety standards.
- Manage maintenance and upkeep of employee housing, ensure livable, safe, code-compliant accommodations.
- Address site-specific challenges including operating septic systems, salt air corrosion, and seasonal weather impacts on infrastructure.
- Partner with and manage contractors and vendors for capital projects, service contracts, repairs or upgrades.
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, CapEx and operational forecasting.
- Respond to emergency maintenance issues and ensure 24/7 on-call coverage for critical incidents.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless guest and team member experiences.
- Serve on Planning Committee member (senior leadership committee)
Qualifications:
- Minimum 8 years of progressive engineering/facilities management experience in a resort or large hospitality setting.
- Strong technical knowledge of MEP, HVAC, general construction and mechanical systems.
- Experience with fresh and saltwater pools and spa equipment preferred.
- Demonstrated success with preventative maintenance planning and execution.
- Experience managing employee housing or residential facilities is highly desirable.
- Understanding of environmental conditions and infrastructure needs specific to resort property in an oceanfront setting.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Budget management and capital planning and management experience required.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Ability to read building plans and blueprints
- Strong computer skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb stairs/ladders for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, and carry up to 75 pounds independently.
- Comfortable working in indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to visually inspect systems and equipment and hear alarms or audible signals.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools, diagnostic devices, and other standard maintenance equipment.
- Must be able to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations, including after-hours and on-call availability.
- May require extended periods of computer use, preparing reports, and managing preventive maintenance schedules and budgets.
