Nesco Resource is seeking a Director of Engineering to join our client's team at their Old Saybrook, CT location. POSITION OVERVIEW:We seek a self-driven, highly motivated Engineering leader with a strong technical background who has demonstrated success in developing products both as an individual contributor and as a manager of teams. This role will lead our Engineering team in the development of new product solutions for all of our expanding market segments. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordination and prioritization of engineering department, sample shop and test lab resources to meet company objectives.
  • Leads and coordinates various Engineering activities including design, prototype construction, testing and research and development of new and existing product lines.
  • Provide high-level oversight and guidance on issue resolution, ensuring that root causes are identified and addressed.
  • Oversee strategic partnerships with external organizations, driving innovation and ensuring that collaborations are beneficial for the company.
  • Reviews projects for technical accuracy, lends assistance and mentorship for engineering team, reviews and approves technical documentation.
  • Works directly on the development of prototype parts.
  • Oversee the planning and coordination of testing activities with the test lab, ensuring alignment with project timelines and goals.
  • Serves as technical program manager for key projects to ensure that the program meets requirements, timelines, and budgets.
  • Collaborates with the Manufacturing group and business units to support development initiatives, testing and other technical projects.
  • Provide support on capital budgeting and cost estimates for program financial models.
  • Prepares and executes departmental budget.
  • Maintains knowledge of new trends, developments, technologies, materials, and best practices and applies this to company objectives.
  • Assist in formulation and execution of strategic engineering and NPD goals.
  • Ensure adherence to the company's NPD process.
  • Provide focus and clarity to assigned Technology Development projects.
  • Must be able to travel (10 – 20%); company manufacturing sites and occasional client site visits.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees the overall recruitment for the engineering department, working closely with HR and senior team members. Participates in interview process for senior engineering roles.
  • Trains engineering staff and ensures capability and skillsets of engineering department meets the company needs.
  • Establishes high-level workflows and processes for the entire engineering department. Ensures alignment with company goals and oversees major projects.
  • Sets performance standards and goals for the engineering department in alignment with the VP of Engineering. Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations and as well as feedback to all direct reports. Where necessary, identifies training needs and performance enhancement efforts.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for the engineering department. Ensures policies align with company standards and regulatory requirements.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering degree; MBA, management degree or equivalent business experience desired.
  • 10+ years' experience in engineering & product development, project management experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated track record of product development from concept through implementation which has led to successful product introductions and intellectual property creation.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles and design criteria.
  • Good working knowledge of plastics design and manufacturing processes including injection molding, extrusion, blow mold, thermoform and others.
  • Background in working with various polymers.
  • Industry-specific product experience may be advantageous.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD with ability to drive efficient parametric design principles.
  • Experience with Finite Element and Moldflow analyses.
  • Proficiency in designing/implementing NPD process methodology.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills, and superior interpersonal skills for interaction with all levels of personnel and contacts within and outside the company.
  • Proficient in presentations, technical reports, and situational analysis; able to communicate technical subjects to non-technical audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) as well as Teams, Planner. Familiar with Power BI reports.
  • Strong analytical, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Familiar with advanced analytical methods (i.e. Six-Sigma).
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate when appropriate.
  • Experience leading teams of engineers and technicians.
  • High level of decision-making ability; good judgment; maintain high degree of confidentiality; organization ability; ability to function in a competitive business environment involving variables, risks, and continuous change/improvement.
  • Must possess a comfort level with (and interest in) working in a very fast paced product development environment where ideation and production design rapidly evolve.
  • Demonstrated skill in generating and developing innovative concepts and products.
  • Hands-on physical skills associated with product development; experience working in a shop environment and ability to make simple prototypes highly desirable.
  • Experience in managing IP and collaborating with legal teams.
