Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a youth-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 518 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, academic enrichment, and creative expression, we create safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to grow, thrive, and succeed. Role Overview
We are seeking a Volunteer Director of Education to lead MAPs educational vision and oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of academic and social-emotional learning programs. This role will ensure MAPs curriculum and programming meet the diverse needs of students while promoting equity, resilience, and excellence. The Director of Education will collaborate with program staff, volunteers, and community partners to expand MAPs reach and impact.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership for MAPs educational programming, including academic enrichment, mentorship, and SEL initiatives
- Oversee curriculum design, instructional resources, and learning strategies
- Supervise and support education staff, mentors, and volunteers delivering programs
- Partner with schools, educators, and community organizations to strengthen student support systems
- Ensure all programs are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and accessible
- Track program outcomes, analyze data, and report on impact
- Contribute to grant writing, fundraising, and advocacy efforts with educational insights
- Represent MAP in education-focused coalitions, networks, and events
Qualifications
- Proven leadership experience in education, youth development, or nonprofit programming
- Strong background in K12 education, curriculum design, or social-emotional learning
- Excellent organizational, communication, and team management skills
- Ability to design and evaluate impactful, equity-centered programs
- Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and cultural responsiveness
- Passion for mission-driven work and supporting underserved youth
Preferred Skills
- Masters degree in Education, Social Work, Public Policy, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Experience working with students facing housing instability or systemic barriers
- Knowledge of NYC education systems and youth development networks
- Experience with program evaluation, impact reporting, or grant writing
