Director of Platform Engineering:
Summary
- Seeking a visionary and execution-focused Director of Platform Engineering to lead the strategy, design, and operation of our core engineering platforms. Reporting to the VP of Core Retail Services, you will manage teams responsible for DevSecOps, cloud infrastructure (Azure and GCP), networking, and developer tooling.
- You will be instrumental in shaping a world-class developer experience, ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of our infrastructure, and fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence.
- Success in this role requires a blend of deep technical expertise, strong people leadership, strategic thinking, maintaining relationships across several stakeholders, and a passion for enabling engineering velocity through robust, reliable, and secure self-service platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and execute the platform engineering vision, strategy, and roadmap, aligning with business objectives and driving technology transformation.
- Lead, mentor, and develop high-performing Platform Engineering teams responsible for DevSecOps, Cloud Infrastructure, Networking, CI/CD, and Observability.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee the architecture, design, implementation, and operation of scalable, reliable, and cost-effective cloud infrastructure (Azure and GCP), leveraging each cloud's strengths along with Kubernetes, IaC (Terraform), and automation.
- Champion and integrate DevSecOps practices throughout the platform lifecycle; collaborate with Security/Compliance to ensure adherence to standards and implement robust security controls, automation, and monitoring.
- Drive a Platform as a Product mindset, focusing on developer experience, self-service capabilities, clear documentation, and feedback loops to enhance engineering productivity.
- Establish and maintain SLOs/SLAs, implement robust observability (monitoring, logging, tracing), and lead incident management and response processes for platform services.
- Manage platform budget, optimize costs, manage vendor relationships, and report on key metrics to leadership.
- Partner effectively with Software Engineering, Product Management, Security, and other stakeholders to deliver cohesive solutions and ensure platform capabilities meet evolving needs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, SRE, or platform engineering roles, with a proven track record of working on complex, large-scale distributed systems.
- 5+ years of experience in a leadership role managing multiple technical teams, with demonstrated success in scaling engineering functions.
- Deep expertise in cloud infrastructure platforms (Azure and GCP), including architecture design, security best practices, cost optimization strategies, and each platform's core service offerings.
- Hands-on experience with container orchestration technologies, particularly Kubernetes, and extensive experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using tools like Terraform.
- Strong understanding and practical experience implementing modern CI/CD pipelines, automation strategies, and integrating DevSecOps principles and tools into the software development lifecycle.
- Proficiency with observability concepts and tooling: monitoring, logging, tracing, and SLO definition leveraging tools and standards such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana.
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and cloud security
- Excellent leadership capabilities, including team building, coaching, and mentoring, coupled with outstanding communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
- Strategic mindset with proven ability to develop and articulate a technical vision and strategy that aligns with and supports business goals.
- Experience driving operational excellence, managing budgets effectively, and utilizing data and metrics to inform decisions and measure success.
