Position Overview
The Director of Community Outreach leads efforts that strengthen the College's external partnerships, expand mission-aligned programming, and support enrollment growth. This role is designed to deepen our engagement with regional schools, organizations, and prospective student populations while helping Sterling develop programs that serve learners beyond our traditional undergraduate degrees. The Director will work closely across departments to ensure that pre-college, gap year, dual enrollment, and continuing education opportunities reflect community needs, strengthen Sterling's visibility, and generate both enrollment pipelines and revenue opportunities that strengthen the long-term health and impact of the institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Support admission recruitment efforts through travel, event attendance, and direct engagement with prospective students and families through tours, open houses, and on-campus events.
- Build and maintain existing partnerships with K-12 schools, homeschool networks, local businesses, nonprofits, and other mission-aligned regional organizations.
- Develop and strengthen relationships with and gather data and feedback from guidance counselors, educators, thought partners, and current students to ensure offerings such as dual enrollment, Pre-College, and Gap Year programs align with community needs and the strategic vision.
- Work in partnership with faculty and the President's Leadership Team to lead planning for non-degree programming including dual enrollment, Pre-College Program and Gap Year.
- Evaluate and refine existing programming while piloting new initiatives that align with Sterling's mission and regional demand.
- Collaborate with the Department of Marketing & Communication to promote programming and events to target audiences.
- Work in partnership with the Office of Advancement to pursue grant funding and philanthropic dollars in support of piloted initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Work or related experience in K-12 education, college or university, educational partnerships, program development, and/or nonprofit leadership.
- Results-driven admission leader with a background in college or program admission, sales, or recruitment, consistently meeting enrollment targets through data-informed strategy, community engagement, and outreach.
- Strong written and verbal communication, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.
- Passion for environmental stewardship, community engagement, and experiential education.
- Ability to travel regionally. College vehicle or mileage reimbursement available (8–10 weeks annually.)
- Valid driver's license.
- Regular evening and weekend work during travel seasons (primarily fall and spring.)
Work Conditions & Physical Demands
- Periods sitting in a car, airplane, other means of transportation, or in an office or other style chair.
- Daily use of keyboard, computer, mouse, and other office equipment.
- Driving of a car for extended periods of time and in weather conditions of the area where work is occurring.
- Lifting and moving items weighing up to 45 pounds, alone - in and out of a vehicle, and in and out of work areas.
- Transporting oneself and work materials across indoor and outdoor environments, possibly including uneven terrain and areas affected by weather conditions.
- Ability to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time such as during a college fair.
