Job Title: Director of Architecture

Location: Bend, OR (On-Site) – Open to Relocation

Overview

A leading privately held residential homebuilder with a strong footprint across the Pacific Northwest is seeking a Director of Architecture to lead its architectural division in Bend, Oregon. This executive-level role will oversee design operations while managing and mentoring a team of 8 architects, ensuring alignment with the company's community-focused homebuilding strategy.

The ideal candidate is a manager first and an architect second—a proven leader who excels in guiding people, processes, and projects. This role requires balancing operational oversight with architectural expertise, driving efficiency, innovation, and quality in home design while collaborating cross-functionally with land, development, and construction leaders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership, mentorship, and oversight of an 8-person architecture team, ensuring efficiency, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Establish architectural standards, processes, and workflows to maintain design consistency, quality, and compliance across all residential products.
  • Partner with land acquisition, development, and construction teams to integrate design into community planning and execution.
  • Drive architectural innovation by balancing design creativity with cost efficiency, constructability, and market trends.
  • Review and approve schematic designs, construction documents, and specifications, ensuring accuracy, code compliance, and alignment with brand identity.
  • Manage consultant and vendor relationships, including engineers, designers, and outside architects, to support design execution.
  • Oversee permit submittals, entitlements, and municipal approvals from an architectural perspective.
  • Monitor workload distribution, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring projects stay on schedule and within budget.
  • Act as a liaison with senior leadership, presenting architectural strategies and progress updates to executives and ownership.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of architectural experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or director-level management role.
  • Licensed architect preferred, but not required if equivalent residential homebuilding experience is demonstrated.
  • Proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop a team of architects and designers.
  • Strong knowledge of residential design standards, building codes, and permitting processes.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple deadlines.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with land, development, and construction teams.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and presentation skills.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary + substantial performance-based bonus
  • Relocation assistance available
  • Paid time off, holidays, and sick leave
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Car allowance and phone stipend
  • Direct access to executive leadership with influence over product and design strategy
  • Collaborative, mission-driven culture with a strong focus on community impact
