Director, Event Production – New York Road Runners

The Event Development and Production Department (EDP) develops and produces NYRR events from concept through execution in alignment with NYRR's mission. The team manages core elements of operations across events including site management, timing and scoring, volunteer management, hospitality and special events, safety and security, warehouse management, race collateral, city/state agency relationships, and permitting. This position reports to the Head of Events and Athletes with Disabilities Operations and is responsible for leading a team that produces NYRR event properties, including the TCS New York City Marathon.

Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties)
  • Demonstrate conceptual and strategic thinking to establish budgets, goals, objectives, and activities in accordance with organizational policies; assess and implement workflow processes to maximize department efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership and direction in the planning and execution of NYRR event properties, including the TCS New York City Marathon.
  • Directly manage 2–3 Event Leads and/or Coordinators, including directing daily workloads, project goals, and annual performance reviews.
  • Contribute to departmental and individual goal setting aligned with organizational plans.
  • Contribute to short- and long-term organizational planning and strategy as a management team member; develop and grow event properties per the strategic plan.
  • Develop and maintain event standards (production levels, participant services, medical, safety, security, communications, technology, contingency plans), tools, and analytics to optimize efficiency.
  • Plan resources and manage event budgets and staffing models.
  • Project manage NYC, Brooklyn Half Marathon, Bronx 10M, and Staten Island Half Marathon events.
  • Lead Event Management and Logistics team meetings; support NYRR events on-site in key areas.
  • Collaborate with City Agencies and internal departments to ensure successful event operations and brand consistency.
  • Coordinate with Runner Services, Warehouse, Experiential, Race Scoring, Volunteer, Hospitality, Broadcast, Security, and Medical teams to integrate plans into overall operations.
  • Perform other duties and department projects as assigned.
Experience

Minimum 5–7 years of event project management experience, preferably in sports and/or entertainment, with strong logistical/operational and customer service background.

Education & Certifications

College degree preferred but not required.

Skills and Attributes
  • Ability to relate to diverse populations with a positive attitude and appreciation for fitness and running.
  • Event site planning and management experience.
  • ROS, scripting, and stage management experience.
  • Budget management and detailed analysis/reporting capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel, work weekends and extended hours as needed.
  • Resourceful, strategic thinking with a strong work ethic and tenacity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; strong leadership and collaborative skills.
  • Attention to detail; ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment; works well under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Comfortable presenting to senior management and external City Agencies.
  • Ability to work weekends or evenings.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Other Requirements
  • Proficient in Spanish a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; Excel, PowerPoint, Word; AutoCAD preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment greater than 25 lbs.
