Director, Audience & Strategy (Temporary)

About the Role
Projects & Initiatives is looking for an audience director to support framing and promotion of stories, identify coverage gaps, offer insights and analysis, and collaborate with our business side partners on packaging series for sales.
This is a full time temporary role that will begin in October 2025 through June 2026.
This is an excluded, hybrid position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:
- Identify potentially fruitful coverage areas for projects using audience data, research, newsroom priorities, gaps, team goals (including sponsorship potential). When needed, advise on approaches to those topics, story ideas, and formats.
- Advise editors across the desk on headlines, promotional imagery, framing, publication timing, and metadata before publication.
- Add context to monthly reports from the analytics team including applicable insights on what worked well and not as well to connect with readers.
- Share updates from across the newsroom to help editors better understand reader trends and behaviors. Keep audience concerns top-of-mind for every team member.
- Contribute to the gathering of necessary information and packaging of opportunities for advertising.
- Advise on newsletter strategy and build growth targets for Headway, The Learning Network, and In Short.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- You will report to the Senior Editor, Projects & Initiatives
Basic Qualifications:
- At least 7 years of meaningful experience in all of the following: program planning and execution; distribution and audience growth; and content strategy
- Experience managing stakeholders of all levels and functions toward a shared outcome
- Extreme skill in diplomatic communication, both written and verbal
Preferred Qualifications:
- Comfort operating in a news environment
- Experience optimizing workflow
The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$130,000 - $160,000 USD
