Job Overview

Payday is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Developer and Database Manager to join our technology team in a role that integrates database development with the strategic oversight of our systems. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in designing, developing, and maintaining robust applications, while also managing and optimizing database systems to ensure their security, availability, and performance. This position requires a thoughtful and disciplined professional capable of contributing to both the technical and operational aspects of our digital infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Software Development & Engineering Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable and secure software applications.
  • Collaborate with front-end and back-end developers to integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic.
  • Maintain and enhance existing applications by fixing bugs and implementing new features.
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code; participate in code reviews and software design discussions.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to gather business requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
  • Design, implement, and maintain database schemas, tables, views, indexes, and stored procedures across relational and/or NoSQL systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server).
  • Monitor and optimize database performance; implement tuning strategies to ensure efficiency and reliability.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, backup, and disaster recovery processes are in place and effective.
  • Conduct database maintenance, upgrades, and migrations with minimal downtime.
  • Develop and manage ETL processes and data integration pipelines.
  • Identify and analyze logical database structures to meet current and future organizational needs.
  • Develop and maintain a corporate data directory, including metadata and classification protocols.
  • Establish and enforce database access controls and security procedures.
  • Design, implement, and test database backup and recovery strategies.
  • Analyze system requirements and recommend equipment or infrastructure changes as needed.

Leadership & Supervisory Duties

  • Hire, train, and manage database analysts and technical staff.
  • Schedule, organize, and assign tasks and projects across the database and development teams.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and manage disciplinary actions in alignment with company policies.
  • Develop and implement departmental budgets.
  • Provide training guidelines and support for data-entry personnel, analysts, and end users.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with departments to refine systems and maximize data utility.
  • Stay current with emerging database and software technologies through continued education and industry engagement.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in software development.
  • 5+ years of experience in database management/administration.

Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency in C# and a thorough understanding of other computer languages used in database development.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and experience with database systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server.
  • Experience with modern development frameworks and tools.
  • Familiarity with cloud database services is a plus.
  • Thorough understanding of database design, construction, and system installation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical abilities to identify and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and communicate complex technical information clearly.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong managerial and training capabilities for supervising and mentoring technical staff.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with data warehousing and business intelligence tools.
  • Familiarity with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Certifications in database administration or cloud platforms (e.g., AWS Certified Database Specialty).
  • Background in payroll processing systems.
