Detention Officers supervise inmates in the Tarrant County Confinement system, ensuring the safety of property and persons in custody. Responsibilities include administrative duties related to inmate transfer and confinement.

  • Perform duties in all assigned responsibilities
  • Maintain physical fitness for job duties
  • Respond immediately to emergencies and drills
  • Use reasonable force to prevent threats
  • Supervise inmate feeding and monitor dietary needs
  • Supervise cleaning of jail areas
  • Manage inmate movement within the facility
  • Distribute mail and supplies to inmates
  • Supervise recreational activities
  • Utilize emergency equipment
  • Work assigned shifts
  • Enforce rules and regulations
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures
  • Handle volatile situations professionally
  • Maintain control and custody of inmates
  • Ensure safety and security of facilities
  • Complete mandatory paperwork
  • Produce legal documents as required
  • Conduct security checks
  • Complete all required training and certifications
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
    • Good interpersonal and public relations skills
    • Experience in public speaking desirable
    • Ability to interpret court orders, statutes, and policies
    • Proficiency in preparing official documents
    • Proficient in defensive tactics and use of force
    • Knowledge of Jail Standards and State statutes
    • Understanding of department policies and procedures
    • Ability to control emotions and communicate effectively
    • Ability to create clear reports
    • Ability to work with diverse populations

    • Accountability and appropriate use of force

    Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, minimum 18 years of age, valid driver license, U.S. citizenship, and ability to obtain necessary licenses within specified timeframes. Physical requirements include the ability to exert force, lift, climb, and respond to emergency situations. Vision and hearing standards must be met. The role involves exposure to cleaning agents, communicable diseases, and potential hazards such as riots or escape attempts.

    Applicants must demonstrate adequate vision, hearing, and physical ability to perform duties, including wearing protective gear and restraining inmates. Psychological and medical fitness certifications are required as per Texas law. Background checks will be conducted.
