Deputy Center Director and Director of Operations, Spring Canyon Retreat and Conference Center

Represent and conduct the ministry of Spring Canyon in accordance with the OCF and Spring Canyon Ministry Plans through conducting daily operations or as directed by the Center Director or his designated representative. Serve as a member of the Spring Canyon ministry team, with a focus on providing spiritual refreshment and blessing to every guest. Supports programs and activities at Spring Canyon that draw guests closer to Jesus Christ and make an impact on the way they live for Him. Help ensure that Spring Canyon is a place where members and guests of OCF are emboldened in their faith and walk, equipped to live out their faith and run their race, encouraged along the entire course of their race, and engaged in their calling as they live out their lives.

Reports To: Center Director, Spring Canyon, Col Kim Hawthorne, USAF (Ret.)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Live faithfully as a disciple of Jesus Christ and in obedience to God's Word. Subscribe to the OCF Statement of Faith and Participation, and Biblical Guidelines for Member and Leader Conduct without reservation. Be an active OCF member.
  • Act in the stead of the Center Director in their absence, to ensure continuity of operations and decision-making.
  • Responsible to disciple, counsel and teach subordinates, encouraging and equipping them for growth in their faith in Christ. Responsible to establish and maintain a healthy spiritual environment in which subordinates can work, learn, and develop.
  • Facilitate adult discussions and Bible studies, as assigned; help set a Christ-honoring spiritual tone for the conference center. Lead prayer and devotional times with subordinates as appropriate to promote their spiritual growth.
  • Team–Contribute to the success of Spring Canyon by being an integral part of the ministry team and by supporting the Center Director to create a God-honoring environment where people encounter Christ and are encouraged in their walk. Contribute to the fullness of the “heartbeat” of Spring Canyon and encourage God-loving relationships with every staff and family member at Spring Canyon.

Manage Day-to-Day Conference Center Operations

  • Manage daily operations to include guest services and hospitality, housekeeping, marketing, office activities, drinking water and wastewater, and organize them to enhance ministry advancement, guest satisfaction, and smooth operations.
  • Supervise and approve staff schedules to ensure the right staff are assigned to support operations, while ensuring proper time off for rest and personal time.
  • Keep all Spring Canyon programs/activities aligned and operating with a common vision as set by the Center Director. Ensure programs maintain a significant spiritual impact and are conducted safely.
  • Revise and/or formulate Center Director's policies and promote their implementation.
  • Liaise with the Center Director to make operational-level decisions and set strategic goals.
  • In conjunction with the key staff functions, assess each program, ensure the effectiveness of current and future programs, and propose recommendations to the Center Director for any changes to enhance and make each program more effective.
  • You are at the forefront of customer service. Your team members are likely the first staff members to greet guests and the last to farewell them upon their departure.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to guests who are checking into or out of Spring Canyon, and offer assistance to guests as needed during their stay.
  • Provide guests with above-and-beyond service to ensure their experience will be worth remembering. Anticipate guests' needs and respond promptly.
  • Provide an excellent reservation experience for guests–measured by guest evaluations and comments.
  • Create events in UltraCamp for Summer Celebration, Rocky Mountain High, Father Teen Adventure, Winter Retreat, Climb Together, and other OCF-sponsored events.
  • For group retreats and private bookings, complete actions like contracting, tracking reservations, collecting deposits, setting prices, assigning guest facilities, and obtaining group schedules.
  • Graciously deal with irate guests and find ways to resolve issues to the guest's satisfaction.
  • Provide hospitality services: fluent knowledge of local restaurants and attractions, and on-property guest amenities.
  • Supervise Housekeeping Lead and oversight of all work activities of cleaning personnel to ensure clean, orderly, and attractive lodges, chalets, cabins, and rooms at Spring Canyon.
  • Ensure all designated buildings meet high standards for cleanliness and readiness for guests.
  • Coordinate with staff, if necessary, to accomplish rapid turn-over of any facilities.

Champion Spring Canyon's Ministry Programs

  • Champion all seven of Spring Canyon's signature programs: Summer Celebration, Rocky Mountain High (RMH), Father Teen Adventure (FTA), Winter Retreat (WR), Climb Together (CT), group retreats, and private bookings.
  • Supervise Spring Canyon marketing efforts in collaboration with OCF's Director of Communications.
  • In collaboration with the Center Director, increase facility Utilization Rate/Camper Days for programs.
    • Recruit guests to attend all seven of Spring Canyon's signature programs to ensure maximum appropriate utilization of the conference center.
      • Cultivate additional retreat groups throughout the year. Goal is to fill all available weekends with retreat groups.
    • Maintain regular correspondence with previous guests, donors, and target audience, as well as regular group retreats that align with the missions of OCF and Spring Canyon.
    • Assist the Center Director in maintaining and increasing Spring Canyon's donor base.

Drinking Water

  • Serve as the Drinking Water Treatment and Distribution System Primary Operator. It is expected that the Director of Operations will become licensed as a Colorado Class S Certified Water Professional within six months of hiring.
  • Ensure Spring Canyon complies with all state and federal regulations and is prepared for state and federal inspections at all times.
  • Comply with all required testing and submit required and accurate documentation to the state in a timely manner.

Wastewater

  • Serve as the Wastewater Collection and Treatment Operator in Responsible Charge, to include maintenance and management of the on-site wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). It is expected that the Director of Operations will become licensed as a Colorado Class S Certified Wastewater Professional within six months of hiring.
  • Ensure Spring Canyon complies with all state and federal regulations and is prepared for state and federal inspections at all times.
  • Comply with all testing and submit required and accurate documentation to the state and federal government in a timely manner.

Any other duties the Center Director or his designated representative may assign (e.g., kitchen and dining room crew, snow removal, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

  • A demonstrated strong and growing Christian faith and desire to be part of the Spring Canyon ministry effort.
  • A passion to minister to guests and meet their needs (possibly at all hours of the day/night).
  • Ideally, someone retired from military service with a strong and current professional and spiritual reputation.
  • Ideally, but not essentially, someone with an established history in OCF and Spring Canyon or Christian camping/conference center ministry experience and leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field; or minimum of six years' experience in related industry or field.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Must be detail oriented.
  • Advanced computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email, and basic internet usage.
  • Ability to work well under the pressure of meeting tight deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects while maintaining focus on details required for individual assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal/internal guest service skills.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of work, rapidly adapt to changing environment and possess strong work ethics.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently with little direct guidance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the organization.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for assigned tasks and complete them on schedule.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Ability to communicate information efficiently and succinctly.

Working Conditions:

Serves at Spring Canyon Retreat and Conference Center and resides on Spring Canyon property in staff housing, or obtains own housing in the vicinity of Buena Vista, CO. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position (paid on a salary basis) and the working hours required will be as necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the ministry. Due to the nature of Conference Center ministry, regular, full-time exempt employees living in conference center housing are on-call 24 hours per day with no provision for direct compensation. Being on-call does not prohibit employees from effectively controlling their time or leaving the premises. This position may be required to work irregular hours in order to meet guest needs. Occasional out-of-town and some local travel is required.

Compensation for this position is approximately $56,500 (recognizing the OCF house provides over $40,000 of benefit).
