Job Description

Summary / Objective

The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans, a public, historically black university, is committed to empowering and promoting the upward mobility of diverse populations of traditional and nontraditional students through quality academic programs, teaching, research, and service to achieve excellence in higher education using various teaching and learning modalities. Students and faculty are encouraged to help create a thriving academic environment at SUNO. As such, the program faculty is expected to be committed to the standards of teaching excellence.

The Dean of the Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library is responsible for all aspects of the library's operation, including managing the collection, hiring and supervising staff, maintaining technology, developing the budget, and meeting research and library needs. The Dean will ensure adherence to legal and university policies, have teaching responsibilities, and serve on faculty committees as appropriate.

The Dean will collaborate with university stakeholders to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and engagement, making the library welcoming and inclusive.

  • This position is partly funded by the Title III-B, HBCU federal grant. The Dean will implement objectives related to this grant.

Essential Functions

  • Develop the program's infrastructure with the Vice Chancellor, focusing on :
  • Student engagement through partnerships and initiatives;
  • Inclusive and equitable policies;
  • Technology and learning collaboration;
  • Supervise librarians and staff, supporting their development;
  • Manage library operations and budget;
  • Lead all domains of library operations;
  • Engage in grant writing for funding;

Additional responsibilities include :

  • Part-time teaching (6-9 credits), including evenings, weekends, or online courses, with college-level teaching experience;
  • Teaching courses, informing students of standards, maintaining office hours, and assessing learning outcomes;
  • Collaborating on curriculum development and course proposals;
  • Recruiting prospective students, working with partner institutions;
  • Serving on committees, advising students, supervising research projects;
  • Supporting areas like SUNOMA and CAAS;
  • Other duties as assigned.

The candidate should demonstrate cultural sensitivity, teamwork, analytical skills, conference participation, research excellence, passion for teaching, patience, and interpersonal skills.

Office and classroom setting.

Physical Demands

Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, communicate, use a keyboard, and lift up to 10 pounds (up to 25%).

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science.
  • 3-5 years of library administrative experience.
  • Proven success in academic library operations.
  • Understanding of technological systems, Open Education Resources, and archival management.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Additional graduate degree in an academic discipline (preferred).
  • Strong record of professional service and scholarship.
