Overview The Data Scientist will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by leveraging data to inform strategic decisions and initiatives in a public health organization. Working within Maine CDC's Informatics team, as part of the Division of Disease Surveillance, the Data and Informatics Specialist will utilize advanced analytics, statistical techniques to derive insights that support public health efforts. The data scientist will develop a data visualization plan for the Infectious Disease Epidemiology program, adapt existing visualizations, and complete data analysis projects in collaboration with our Epidemiology team. The Data Scientist will be hired by the CDC Foundation and assigned to the Maine CDC Informatics team, as part of the Division of Disease Surveillance. This position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S. based candidates. Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and improve data analysis and visualization tools for use by organization staff, to provide timely, relevant information that informs decisions affecting the public's health.
- Gather requirements and input from internal teams to validate usability and effectiveness of visualization standards
- Design, author, and update a comprehensive data visualization plan that outlines standards for visualizing Maine's infectious disease data that emphasizes clarity, consistency, and accessibility
- Write a data visualization style guide that defines guidelines for chart types, color palettes, typography, layout, labeling, and interactivity to support effective communication of infectious disease data
- Develop materials that detail the data visualization plan and its requirements
- Analyze diverse datasets related to public health issues to identify trends, patterns, and correlations.
- Work with Informatics and Analytics teams to standardize existing visualizations and dashboards to the data visualization plan
- Apply statistical methods to extract actionable insights.
- Develop predictive models to anticipate disease patterns, assess risk factors, and guide intervention strategies.
- Continuously optimize algorithms for enhanced accuracy and performance.
- Create compelling visualizations and reports to communicate findings to partners and decision-makers.
- Present data-driven insights in a clear and understandable manner to facilitate informed decision-making.
- Collaborate with the public health organization and its partners to understand their data needs and objectives.
- Provide data-driven support and guidance to inform public health policies and initiatives. Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and methodologies in data science and analytics.
- Explore innovative approaches to address complex public health challenges and improve data analysis capabilities.
- Implement and maintain robust data security measures to protect sensitive information and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Epidemiology, or related field. Master's or PhD in related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience.
- Prior experience working with public agencies involving data visualization or digital communications
- Knowledge of user experience and user interface design that is applicable to data visualizations and dashboards
- Experience developing a data visualization product vision and strategy and have led multi-disciplinary teams to achieve that vision from concept to launch.
- Knowledge of visual design aspects, storytelling with data, and accessibility standards for data dashboards
- Prior experience authoring or contributing to design or data standards, brand guidelines, or data governance documentation
- Proficiency in statistical software (such as SAS, R, SQL).
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R.
- Understanding of public health datasets and ability to communicate epidemiologic concepts with data
- Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, ArcGIS).
- Proactive communicator and collaborator, comfortability with reaching out to other remote employees
- Ability to take ownership of tasks by coordinating meetings, gathering input, and maintaining project momentum through self-directed action
- Experience with data manipulation and analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Pandas, NumPy).
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to interpret complex datasets and derive meaningful insights.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical partners effectively.
- Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities.
- Professional certifications in data science or public health analytics preferred.
- Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills; collegial; energetic; and able to develop productive relationships with colleagues and partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently and within teams.
- Experience working in a virtual environment with remote partners and teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

- Salary Range:$92,700-$134,275 per year, plus benefits. Individual salary offers will be based on experience and qualifications unique to each candidate.
