About the Project
The New York City Youth Risk Behavior Survey (NYC YRBS) is a citywide initiative sponsored by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to assess health-related behaviors among public school students in grades 6–12. The survey covers topics such as mental health, nutrition, physical activity, substance use, and other behaviors that affect adolescent well-being.
Data from this survey help monitor public health trends, evaluate local prevention efforts, and shape policies and programs that support student health across NYC.
About the Role
We are seeking dependable, detail-oriented individuals to serve as Data Collectors during Fall 2025. Data Collectors will be responsible for administering a paper-and-pencil survey to students in selected public middle and high schools. This is a temporary, part-time role with flexible weekday assignments.
Key Responsibilities
Administer student surveys on-site in NYC schools.
Ensure standardized data collection procedures are followed.
Maintain confidentiality and protect student privacy throughout the process.
Record and submit daily updates on school participation.
Communicate with schools in advance to coordinate visits.
Transport survey materials to and from school sites.
Participate in a mandatory, in-person training on September 25–26, 2025.
Position Requirements
Daily access to email, internet, and a cell phone.
Availability up to 5 days per week during the survey period (late September through December).
Morning availability (some schools may require arrivals as early as 6:00 a.m.).
Ability to pass a background screening.
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs of materials.
Preferred Experience
Prior experience working with adolescents, especially in school settings.
Familiarity with NYC public schools; PETS clearance preferred.
Experience in field data collection or survey research.
Independent, reliable, and adaptable in a variety of settings.
Compensation & Reimbursement
Training: Paid at your hourly rate for 16 hours of in-person training.
Survey Visits: Paid 12 hours per school for data collection visits.
Recruitment Visits: Paid 4 hours per school.
Material Drop-off/Pick-up: Paid 2 hours per school.
Mileage Reimbursement: $0.70 per mile plus tolls and parking for personal vehicle use.
We aim to assign 2–3 school visits per week; however, the schedule depends on school readiness and availability.
