Science | Service | Sustainability Under general supervision, the Dams Safety Engineering Associate II provides advanced engineering expertise for the dam safety for the Bureau of Regional and Laboratory Services. May perform supervisory and/or training duties. Provides advanced knowledge and understanding of the dam safety program or demonstrates potential for advanced understanding of the program area. Job Responsibilities:
- Review preliminary engineering reports, engineering plans and specifications and other technical documents related to construction, operation, or maintenance of state-regulated dams to ensure compliance with the Bureau of Water Dam Safety Program regulations. Make technical recommendations, issue approvals to operate or take other appropriate action based upon findings of review.
- Conduct construction, final and operation inspections of state-regulated dams with discretionary authority to take appropriate action based upon findings of inspections. Prepares necessary documentation of activities.
- Conduct hazard reviews of dams and evaluate unclassified, unpermitted dams. Prepare necessary documentation and make technical recommendations.
- Responds and investigates complaints received from the public. Take appropriate, immediate and follow up actions.
- Assist regulated community (engineers, operators, etc.) with advice regarding preparation and submission of engineering reports, engineering plans and specifications, monitoring reports and other environmentally related documents.
- Initiate enforcement action by submitting enforcement referrals to the program enforcement section after supervisor's approval.
- Perform other duties as required, which includes, but is not limited to, attending periodic staff meetings.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A master's degree in engineering.
- A bachelor's degree in engineering and one (1) year of experience in environmental engineering.
- A bachelor's degree in engineering and two (2) years of experience as an engineer.
The education must qualify the applicant to become registered as a Level A Professional Engineer in South Carolina and must meet one of the education requirements outlined on the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations website found at: *If the applicant is utilizing the 'substantially equivalent education' pathway, the approval letter from LLR must be final at time of application.
