Salary: $19.26 Hourly Location : New Bern, NC Job Type: Part-Time Temporary Job Number: 11078 Department: Water Opening Date: 08/07/2025 Closing Date: Continuous FLSA: Non-Exempt Primary Purpose The primary focus of this position is to provide exceptional customer service for the customers of Craven County Water Department. Performs a variety of clerical work in the receipt and processing of revenues. Essential Functions
  • Greet and assist customers in person, over the phone, and via email. Provides information to customers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Respond to routine inquiries related to water service, billing, payments, meter readings, service requests, and account status.
  • Receives payments over the counter, through the drop box, and the mail; compares checks with invoices to ensure proper payments; prepares and issues receipts; posts payments to proper accounts in computer files; balances cash drawer daily, reconciling receipts with cash on hand and checks received over the counter or by mail with invoices received.
  • Processes utility applications for new service and reconnection of service; receives and processes payments; processes work orders for new and existing water service customers; Aides in the billing process by reviewing accuracy of meter readings and calculations to bill Craven County water customers; generates revenue report for billing area.
  • Prepares various correspondences to customers or other County residents. Assuming responsibility for correctness of spelling, punctuation, format, and grammar.
  • Establishes and maintains various files, filing and retrieving information as requested or otherwise necessary.
Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from high school, and 1 to 2 years of experience in customer service and clerical work, preferably involving receipt or accounting for money; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of policies and procedures of the County Water Department.
  • General knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, equipment, and clerical and bookkeeping techniques.
  • Some knowledge of the geographic layout of the public utilities system and the County.
  • Skill in the operation of common office equipment, including computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs.
  • Ability to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with customers and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
