POSITION OVERVIEW
The U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota is seeking a Courtroom Deputy for District Judge Katherine M. Menendez in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Courtroom Deputy performs general and specialized court and courtroom functions, including calendaring and other court services. Responsibilities involve managing the judge's caseload, attending and logging court proceedings, and processing orders. This role requires a high level of knowledge and complexity regarding court operations, proficiency in courtroom work, including calendar management and reporting. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with a high attention to detail. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional remote work and additional hours as needed.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Manage judge's cases by calendaring, distributing, monitoring, and enforcing deadlines. Monitor filing of pertinent documents and respond promptly to judicial orders.Serve as the primary source of information on status conferences, hearings, trials, and other case processes.Organize and manage exhibits used in court proceedings, including setup and troubleshooting electronic evidence presentation systems. Attend court sessions and conferences, assist with the orderly flow of proceedings, set up the courtroom, ensure all necessary participants are present, and manage exhibits. Take notes of proceedings, rulings, notices, and prepare minute entries electronically.Review cases or reports for necessary actions. Calendar and regulate case movement, keeping the judge and staff informed of case progress. Assist with jury selection and maintain related records. Act as liaison between the clerk's office, the bar, the public, and the judge to ensure smooth case proceedings. Maintain contact with counsel during deliberations.Schedule interpreters, refer defendants to probation, and draft orders and judgments for the judge's approval, including criminal judgments. Docket orders, pleadings, judgments, and minutes using applicable automated systems. Inform jury clerk of upcoming trials and juror needs.Coordinate hearings and assist with statistical reporting for the Administrative Office. Ensure the quality and accuracy of electronically filed documents and make summary entries on the docket.Review CJA eVoucher emails for judge processing. Manage courtroom operations, supplies, and routine office matters such as handling mail.Maintain the judge's daily calendar, arrange meetings, conferences, naturalization ceremonies, and wedding ceremonies. Greet callers, respond to inquiries, and direct them appropriately.Assist with law clerk logistics, extern onboarding, and prepare the judge's travel itineraries and arrangements. Submit travel vouchers and prepare required reports.Perform other duties as assigned.All application materials will be reviewed to identify the most qualified candidates.
