RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of an Assistant Director or the Program Director, the Counselor provides support and assistance to clients at one of the Progress programs, housed in multi-level facilities. The Counselor's primary responsibilities include advocating for and responding to the treatment and rehabilitation needs of clients. Specific functions include:
I. Essential Functions
Conduct intake interviews with prospective clients.Orient new clients to the program and facility, or enable another client to do so.Respond to psychiatric and/or medical emergencies professionally and promptly, including crisis intervention.Assist in evacuations during emergencies like fire or earthquake.Develop and support clients in treatment plans with maximum participation.Communicate with referral sources and treatment personnel within and outside the agency.Complete intake and discharge paperwork; maintain client progress records.Participate in discharge planning for smooth client transitions.Lead or co-lead group sessions and activities as scheduled.Manage case responsibilities for clients assigned to you.Relay clinical and house-status information during shift changes and meetings.Monitor and record client medications following procedures.Participate in meal planning and preparation; join clients during meals.Attend staff meetings, supervision, and case consultations.Consult with supervisors on case reviews, medications, and group dynamics.Maintain the physical plant, report maintenance issues, and perform minor repairs.Report suspected client abuse as per policy and law.Promote social rehabilitation philosophy among staff and clients.Work overnight, awake, and alert shifts as required.Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies.Perform other duties as assigned.Inform supervisors of personal circumstances affecting job performance.II. Lead or participate in outings and recreational activities.Shop for groceries and household items with clients.Drive clients to treatment destinations.Attend programmatic and administrative meetings when assigned.Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in a mental health-related field; experience may substitute for degree.
- Experience in residential treatment or social rehabilitation preferred.
- At least one year of experience in community mental health preferred.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Good judgment and emotional stability as judged by Progress Foundation.
- Ability to negotiate stairs multiple times per shift and lift/carry 20 lbs.
- Ongoing clearance with California State Department of Social Services.
- Maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
- Basic word processing skills and computer proficiency as required by the City and County of San Francisco Community Behavioral Health Services.
