Job DetailsJob Location RM Detention Center - Wheeling, WV DescriptionJob Summary: The Corrections Counselor meet with clients on a regular basis to provide both individual and group counseling services and crisis intervention. The counselor will assess problems or needs to be addressed, review and discuss progress toward goals, address identified treatment or therapeutic goals, and assess progress. The counselor will assess danger of harm to self or others and provide necessary intervention. This employee will ensure compliance with safe work practices and maintain safe environments in compliance with established agency standards, licensing regulations, and generally accepted practices Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct both individual and group counseling sessions
  • Engage in crisis intervention
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and other written documentation
  • Document resident plans, progress, problems, programs, activities, and participation
  • Prepare reports as needed for court proceedings, treatment planning, etc.
  • Participate in program development as assigned
  • Attend meetings and training as assigned
  • Provide leadership in developing therapeutic programs and interventions
  • Assist security officers as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Provide leadership in program activities.

QualificationsRequired Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques and philosophies used in juvenile detention settings
  • Knowledge of interview and assessment techniques
  • Knowledge of counseling practices and intervention methodologies for the population
  • Knowledge of community resources available for children and their families
  • Ability to conduct individual and group counseling sessions
  • Ability to assess clients' needs and strengths
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective counselor-client relationships
  • Knowledge of juvenile detention policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of techniques used in crisis intervention and de-escalation
  • Ability to communicated effectively with clients, parents, and professionals
  • Ability to observe change in client behaviors
  • Ability to keep accurate records
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail in completing work tasks
  • Ability to be a team player and work with diverse populations.
Education and Experience: Requires Bachelor Degree in Social work, Counseling, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related human services field or 4-6 years experience with juvenile detention centers.
