Incumbent may perform more complex or security sensitive maintenance and repair task from time to time and may work out of his assigned trade when needed.Minimum QualificationsEducation: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.Experience: Two years of electronics experience.Notes

  • The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.
Desired Or Preferred QualificationsPreference will be given to applicants with the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Ability to perform certain installation, maintenance, new construction, or repair tasks.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment needed.
  • Maintain CCTV systems including multiplexors, PLC devices, video components, VCR's, televisions and monitors along with the accompanying computer hardware and software.
  • Maintain audio equipment such as amplifiers, public address systems, intercoms, nurse call and paging systems within the institution.
  • Ability to repair telephone system which is a computer based standalone telephone system, portable radios and MATV systems, which is a satellite receiver based television system for inmate and staff viewing.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland prior to permanent appointment.
  • Some positions in this classification may require employees to acquire the appropriate Maryland driver's license to operate motor vehicles for the transportation of inmates or supplies.
  • Employees who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.
Special RequirementsSelection standards for Correctional Officer certification are established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien statusMust be at least 21 years of ageA completed background investigationOral interviewPhysical examination.Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.SELECTION PROCESSBecoming a Correctional Maintenance Officer requires that a recruit completes the Entry Level Training Program at the Training Academy through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), at one of our regional locations throughout the state of Maryland. Upon successful graduation from the Academy, individuals will be assigned to facilities throughout the state of Maryland. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of Maryland.Please indicate on your application all the counties in the state of Maryland where you are willing to accept employment. Candidates will remain on the certified eligible list for a period of two years.Please make sure that you provide sufficient information on your application to show that you meet the qualifications for this recruitment. Successful candidates placed on the eligible (employment) list for at least one year.Common DisqualifiersPrior Drug Use- The Commission may not certify an applicant to a mandated position if the applicant has within a 12 month period immediately preceding the date of hire, unlawfully used natural cannabis or natural cannabinoids.Arrest Records- No felony convictions; No misdemeanor convictions within five (5) years; No probations before judgement or parole and probation within five (5) years; Must not currently be on parole or probation; No civil drug convictions within three (3) years.Driving Records- No convictions or probations before judgement on any 12-point violation within five (5) years. Including but not limited to driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated, attempting to flee/ elude police and/or driving while license is refused / suspended / revoked /canceled.Academy- Must meet the guidelines for certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.Military records - No separations less than honorable.EXAMINATION PROCESSThe assessment may consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience related to the requirements of the position.It is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.   • Personal Leave - New State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
  • Annual Leave -Ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year
