Job Summary

We are seeking a strategic, hands-on legal professional to establish and lead all aspects of legal and risk issues encountered by a major general contractor working in numerous industries. This role will be responsible for building workflows, managing legal processes, and overseeing risk across the organization. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in contract law, risk mitigation, and cross-functional collaboration, with the ability to scale legal operations in a fast-paced, construction-oriented environment.

Duties

  • Oversee all legal operations and contract management.
  • Oversee all Risk and Compliance for all entities.
  • Partner with Human Resource (HR) on terminations, compliance documentation, and internal investigations.
  • Manage legal aspects of general and subcontractor breaches and business-related disputes, insurance claims, including workers' compensation, construction defect, and HR- related matters.
  • Provide advice on labor strategy in connection with existing labor agreements, project labor agreements as well as other project labor requirements, including prevailing wage.
  • Assist project teams in understanding and pursuing insurance coverage for construction defects, builder risk, pollution, design, auto, worker's compensation and property damage claims.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Department to proactively identify and mitigate jobsite legal risks.
  • Lead the legal setup of new entities and ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Build and lead the legal and risk management department, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Establish KPIs and reporting mechanisms to measure legal team effectiveness and contract turnaround times.
  • Manage all aspects of litigation – supervise outside counsel with regard to responses to document requests, discovery responses, reviewing and editing motions, briefs and memoranda; managing outside council throughout the pre-litigation and litigation processes.
  • Provide advice on procurement matters related to public and private work construction projects.
  • Assist in preparation for and attend alternative dispute resolutions.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on legal, compliance, and risk matters.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school; active bar membership in good standing.
  • 4+ years of legal experience, including in-house counsel or law firm experience with a focus on contracts and risk management.
  • Proven ability to build legal workflows and manage legal operations from the ground up.
  • Experience in construction, engineering, or related industries preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with contract lifecycle management (CLM) tools and legal tech platforms.
  • Experience with entity formation and governance.
  • Familiarity with employment law, insurance claims, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work independently and determine creative solutions.
  • Conversational Spanish or other language skills a plus.
