The Control Systems Engineer (CSE) plays a vital role in executing industrial automation and SCADA projects, supporting the Senior Controls Engineer (SCE) in system design while leading all field-based implementation efforts. Responsibilities include commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and post-deployment support such as preventative maintenance. The CSE also contributes as a hands-on technical resource during control system development, ensuring reliable deployment and operational integrity. This position offers a structured pathway for career advancement, with levels defined as follows:

  • Level 1 (Entry): Assists under supervision with field tasks, gains foundational knowledge of control systems.
  • Level 2 (Intermediate): Independently handles field assignments, leads small-scale commissioning, and supports junior staff.
  • Level 3 (Advanced): Oversees complex deployments, mentors team members, and drives high-level design and integration decisions.

Level designation is based on experience, certifications, and references; the salary range listed below represents the full span across all three CSE levels (Level 1 through Level 3) and may vary based on location, project demands, and individual qualifications. The salary range listed is the base salary and does not include additional benefits, such as a cell phone stipend, dental/vision/medical coverage, or 401(k) matching, which are not highlighted below under Additional Compensation .

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Senior Controls Engineer in the design and development of PLC, SCADA, and HMI solutions.
  • Support system configuration activities including virtual machines, SCADA servers, and control networks.
  • Conduct Functional Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) with internal teams and clients.
  • Perform site commissioning efforts including instrumentation checkout, loop testing, and startup support.
  • Provide troubleshooting, maintenance, and technical support for deployed systems.
  • Perform system updates, backups, and support change management procedures post-deployment.
  • Interpret and apply electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control loop drawings in the field.
  • Collaborate with project teams to resolve field issues and document revisions or improvements.
  • Ensure site safety compliance and adherence to startup protocols during field activities.
  • Network & Server Configuration: Configure and install virtual servers, clients, and network equipment in alignment with project specifications.
  • VFD Troubleshooting: Configure and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) using electrical ladder schematics.
  • Field Deployment & Commissioning: Perform onsite startup, commissioning, and testing of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Execute other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, automation, computer science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Documented references detailing years of experience in field deployment, PLC programming, and control system testing.
  • Familiarity with SCADA platforms (e.g., Ignition, FactoryTalk View, AVEVA) and PLCs (Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider).
  • Working knowledge of Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and Profibus communication protocols.
  • Experience in commissioning industrial systems including VFDs, instrumentation, and control panels.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently in the field. Ability to interpret and execute field wiring, control system layouts, and electrical schematics.
  • Compliance: Ability to pass DoD background checks and drug screening. Valid California driver's license with clean driving and criminal record. Willingness to travel and work on-call shifts as required.

Certifications & Industries (Preferred)

  • Water / Wastewater Treatment and/or Distribution Grade 1 or higher.
  • OSHA 30 and/or EM385-1 safety certificate.
  • ATSI's primarily performs system integration services in the following industries:

Water / Wastewater

This role supports automation solutions in water treatment, distribution, and wastewater facilities. Familiarity with municipal infrastructure, SCADA telemetry systems, pump control, and regulatory reporting is essential. Engineers must understand EPA compliance standards and work frequently with city agencies, utility operators, and contractors.

Food & Beverage

This role supports automation systems in food and beverage processing plants. Emphasis is placed on sanitary design, CIP/SIP operations, batch processing, traceability, and integration with MES/ERP systems. Knowledge of FDA, USDA, and FSMA regulations is highly desirable, along with experience in maintaining production continuity and system validation practices.
