Position Summary:

Construction Inspector, NACE - NYCDOT Bridge Coating

This is an exciting opportunity to work on NYC bridges. As part of our team, you'll contribute to the legacy of bridges that define our city.

Columbia Consulting Engineers is searching for a NACE Certified Coatings Inspector responsible for inspecting NYCDOT bridge painting projects.

* Must be certified as a NACE Certified Coating Inspector Level 1, 2, or 3.

* Must have NYCDOT bridge experience as a Coating Inspector.

* Experience as a Chief Coating Inspector is desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide field inspection on surface preparation and application of protective coatings on bridge steel and surveillance during various substrate cleaning and coating activities.
  • Inspect, accept, and/or reject work according to specifications or applicable codes.
  • Knowledge of operating various substrate cleaning and coating inspection instruments and equipment.
  • Organize and prepare field data into daily, weekly, and monthly inspection reports.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports on conditions, progress, ambient conditions, and typical hold points such as surface preparation, dry film thickness readings, and containment.
  • Communicate effectively with key project partners (coating applicators, safety personnel, project managers, field quality control personnel, and QA supervisor).
  • When requested, participate in internal and client-led procedural and process safety and quality audits.
  • Travel to multiple job sites as needed.
  • Must be capable of working on suspended span bridge structures at high elevations.
  • Ability to read & interpret construction drawings & specifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have active NACE Coatings Inspector Certification (NACE Level 1, 2, or 3). Please specify your certification.
  • Must have at least one year of experience on a NYCDOT bridge project.
  • Knowledge of NYCDOT specifications for Structural Steel Painting.
  • Must have 3 years of experience inspecting bridge coating operations.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Available for Day Shifts. Night shift availability is a plus.

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8 years of construction experience is preferred.
  • 4 years of experience as a Chief Coating Inspector on NYCDOT bridge painting projects is desirable.
  • Experience with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a benefit but not required.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of surface preparation methods and specialty coatings and coating techniques is desired.

Preferred Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • SSPC Bridge Coating Inspector (BCI)
  • SSPC C3 Supervisor
  • Competent Person Training for leading Industrial Structures

Salary: $45.00 - $75.00 per hour - depending on experience and certification

Job Type: Full-time, 8-hour shift. Night shifts enjoy 10% differential.
