For more information, please visitymcawnc.org.ABOUT THE ROLEUnder the direction and guidance of the Community Teen Director and consistent with the mission and values of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the Community Educator Coordinator supports the implementation of community-based education programs that promote youth mental wellness and positive development. This role is responsible for facilitating Youth and Teen Mental Health First Aid trainings as well as other mental wellness and community education offerings, supporting mental wellness programs for teens and caregivers, and assisting with outreach and education efforts across Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell counties. The coordinator works directly with youth, caregivers, community partners, and YMCA staff to ensure programs are welcoming, engaging, and effective. This position requires regular local travel to program and partner sites within Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell counties and is subject to grant funding.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Models inclusive behaviors and embraces all dimensions of diversity
- Supports service line/department in actively working toward association-level objectives, as measured by identified goals/KPIs
- Participates in the budgeting process within their service line/department and serves as a good steward of association resources
- Facilitate mental wellness, life skills, and youth development programming for both community education settings and out-of-school time programs, in collaboration with program leads and community partners throughout Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell counties
- Facilitate community-based education and outreach programs with a focus on mental wellness, including Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) and Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) trainings
- Collaborate with schools, healthcare providers, and other partners to schedule and implement trainings and workshops that support youth mental health and caregiver/adult education
- Support the preparation and adaptation of program materials to ensure accessibility and cultural relevance
- Maintain accurate documentation related to attendance, participation, and grant compliance
- Provide clear and supportive communication with caregivers, school personnel, and community partners
- Assist with logistics for trainings and events, including scheduling, materials setup, registration, and evaluation follow-up
- Model inclusive and trauma-informed practices in all interactions with youth and community members
- Ensure adherence to YMCA of WNC safety policies, child abuse prevention protocols, and behavior expectations
- Attend required YMCA meetings and participate in ongoing professional development
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Community Teen Director
ABOUT YOUQualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Associate's degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- At least 1-2 years of experience working with youth in a school, community, camp, or mental health-related setting preferred
- Demonstrated interest, familiarity, or lived experience related to youth mental health, community wellness, or trauma-informed care
- Must be willing and able to complete certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA), Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA), and trainer status in both within 90 days of hire; training provided
- Current CPR and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire
- Basic computer literacy (e.g., Word, email, spreadsheets) and comfort using scheduling and documentation tools
- Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends to support community events and trainings
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong communication and facilitation skills with both youth and adults; communication style should be professional, compassionate, and adaptable
- Ability to engage and build rapport with teens and tweens in group and one-on-one settings.
- Comfort facilitating activities and conversations related to mental wellness, emotional regulation, and life skills
- Familiarity with trauma-informed approaches, inclusive practices, and strengths-based youth engagement
- Strong organizational skills related to scheduling, record-keeping, and logistics
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and willingness to learn other YMCA systems as needed
- Ability to work collaboratively with other YMCA staff, community partners, and caregivers
- Willingness to grow through supervision and ongoing training
