Location: San Francisco Bay Area This is a hybrid role that is required to work in the San Francisco office 2 days a week.

Reports to: This position reports to the Chief Strategy Officer with a dotted line relationship to the Executive Director.

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a Full-time, Exempt, Management position. The salary range for this position is $156,502 - $176,144. The compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience.

The Opportunity

The Asian Law Caucus (ALC), a leading civil rights organization dedicated to advocating alongside API and immigrant communities, is looking for a passionate and experienced Communications Director to join our senior leadership team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in propelling ALC's mission forward during a critical moment when constitutional rights are being challenged, vulnerable communities face unprecedented attacks, and core democratic principles are at risk.

We seek someone to oversee the communications team and to design, shape and execute a comprehensive, multi-faceted communications strategy throughout the organization. Understanding that strategic narrative development is central to effective advocacy, you will build powerful narratives around ALC's legal work and campaigns to strengthen our impact.This role leads the development and implementation of communications initiatives that articulate ALC's positions and analysis, advance our advocacy and fundraising goals, and elevate the organization's visibility. Critically, you will provide strategic communications support to our grassroots partners and the communities we collaborate with, ensuring their voices and leadership are at the forefront of our movement-building efforts.

The Communications Director will engage with key stakeholders, cultivate relationships with influential external partners, build and maintain strong media relationships, and represent ALC at public events and forums to showcase our shared impact. We are looking for a strategic and innovative communications leader who can work with ALC's leadership, staff, and community partners to build connectivity and cohesion across our network while supporting impactful narratives.

The Organization

Founded in 1972, the Asian Law Caucus is the nation's first legal and civil rights organization serving low-income Asian and Pacific Islander communities. We bring together impact litigation, policy advocacy, legal services, and community empowerment to fight for immigrant justice, economic security, and a stronger, multiracial democracy. We are committed to serving the vast diversity of communities of Asian descent, including Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim communities. Our fights for justice and equity are deeply informed by and in solidarity with fights for liberation by and for Black, Indigenous, and Latino communities.

Responsibilities

Strategic Communications

Develop and execute communications strategies that raise ALC's profile and advance advocacy and fundraising goals

Guide program teams on messaging and campaigns while preparing organizational spokespeople for media engagement and develop strategic narratives around cases and advocacy work to accelerate movement building

Maintain crisis communications protocols and provide rapid response to breaking news affecting our communities

Oversee digital strategy, brand development, and public messaging while highlighting client and community voices

External Relations

Develop and maintain relationships with national, regional, and state news outlets and reporters

Create compelling messaging that positions ALC as a leading voice on issues affecting API and immigrant communities

Represent ALC at public events, coalitions, and forums to increase organizational visibility

Provide strategic communications guidance to grassroots partners and communities we collaborate with, helping amplify their voices and leadership

Partner with development team to create compelling donor communications, including case statements and impact stories that demonstrate organizational effectiveness

Maintain a donor-focused approach across organizational communications while building integrated supporter engagement through merged list-servs and cohesive messaging

Expand visual brand and develop content that effectively communicates impact to attract and retain a diverse donor base

Leadership & Team Management

Lead, manage, and mentor communications team members with clear accountability and effective work plan implementation

Develop and manage communications budget and resources to support organizational advocacy and fundraising objectives

Serve as senior leadership team member, contributing to organizational strategy and decision-making

Desired Qualifications

10+ years in strategic communications and narrative development, with 4+ years in senior leadership roles managing teams of 4+ staff

Proven experience developing comprehensive communications strategies for advocacy organizations, preferably in civil rights, immigration, or social justice

Distinguished track record leading high-impact campaigns that influenced policy, shifted public narratives, or mobilized communities at state/national levels

Extensive media relations experience with established journalist relationships and success placing stories in top-tier outlets,as well as success positioning organizational leadership as thought leaders

Crisis communications expertise managing sensitive issues and developing organizational protocols

Knowledge of issues affecting API and immigrant communities

Digital strategy expertise including experience overseeing innovative digital campaigns that achieved measurable impact

Superior leadership and interpersonal skills with ability to influence across departments and serve as trusted advisor to executive leadership

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related field (advanced degree preferred); equivalent experience considered

Demonstrated commitment to social justice and racial equity through professional work history
