Job Summary

Manages implementation and processes for best practices in data quality. Oversees the work of remote inpatient, outpatient, and pro-fee coders including workflow monitoring and providing a monthly schedule to ensure smooth department operations. Serves as a subject matter expert to clinical and non-clinical staff and employees on the ICD-10 coding system. Complies with AHIMA coding standards and ethics. Provides education support to coding team, providers, and other staff. Maintains necessary skills to perform all jobs in the medical records department. Provides and presents reports on Key Performance Indicators.

Education

Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or similar major or 10 plus years of coding experience in a hospital setting with progressive advancement to a supervisory or management role.

Registration/Certification/Licensure

Credentialed as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC or CPC-H + AHIMA approved ICD-10-CM/PCS training, preferred.

Experience

5 years ICD-9 and CPT-4 experience in hospital setting with 3 years supervisory experience + Possess a strong grasp of: Medicare Severity - Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRG's) All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRG's) Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC's) Potentially Preventable Complications (PPC's)/Maryland Hospital Acquired Conditions (MHAC) experience, required + Familiarity with Meditech, NextGen, and 3M coding and Reimbursement System, preferred + 3M 360 Encompass and HDM experience, a plus.

Other Requirements

Maintains unit-specific and hospital competencies, mandatory learning, and any clinical certifications required in accordance with the Staff Education and Training policy GA-057 and/or any other department requirements. Ability to code inpatient and outpatient medical records. Comprehensive knowledge of Pathophysiology, disease processes, Pharmacology and medical terminology. Ability to effectively communicate with clinical and non-clinical staff, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of HIM workflow. Ability to complete and submit physician queries as appropriate. Ability to effectively multi-task to accomplish department objectives and maintain day-to-day operations of the department. Ability to apply critical thinking skills to solve problems and make suggestions.
