Job Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Technologist performs both routine and specialized laboratory tests on blood and body fluids with a focus on accuracy and reliability. This position plays a critical role in patient care by ensuring precise test results, maintaining laboratory equipment, and adhering to quality control protocols. The Technologist will support laboratory operations, assist in regulatory compliance, and may engage in teaching new staff and students, as well as performing phlebotomy as required.

Essential Functions

  • Execute moderate and high complexity tests accurately and without delay, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Follow quality control procedures, performing necessary checks and troubleshooting any discrepancies.
  • Conduct instrument checks and preventative maintenance as per lab policies.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and escalate to necessary personnel or manufacturers.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members regarding patient results and lab operations.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and collect data for lab accreditation compliance.
  • Collect chain-of-custody urine drug screens and perform phlebotomy as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to fulfill departmental responsibilities efficiently.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned while adhering to organizational policies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field or a passing score on the Clinical Laboratory Technology Proficiency exam approved by HHS (HEW).
  • 0-2 years of experience in acute care settings is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth understanding of lab procedures, quality control protocols, and safety standards.
  • Capability to troubleshoot and resolve instrument-related issues.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in using lab information systems for accurate record-keeping.
  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with healthcare staff.
  • Awareness of population-specific competencies for diverse patient demographics.

Licenses and Certifications

  • ASCP - Medical Technologist preferred.
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)-AMT preferred.
  • CLS-L - Clinical Lab Scientist License preferred.
