Job Title: Chiller Technician - Data Center Operations
What this job involves: As a Chiller Technician at JLL, you will specialize in the operation, maintenance, and repair of critical chiller systems that provide essential cooling for data center facilities. You'll work with large-capacity centrifugal, screw, and scroll chillers, along with associated cooling towers, pumps, and heat rejection systems that are vital to maintaining optimal operating conditions for mission-critical IT infrastructure. This specialized role requires deep expertise in refrigeration systems and the ability to ensure continuous cooling operations in a 24/7 environment.
Your day-to-day tasks will include:
• Operate, maintain, and repair centrifugal, screw, and scroll chillers ranging from 100 to 2000+ tons capacity
• Perform comprehensive preventive maintenance on chiller systems including compressor inspections, oil analysis, and refrigerant management
• Monitor and optimize chilled water systems, cooling towers, condenser water pumps, and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
• Troubleshoot complex chiller malfunctions using advanced diagnostic tools, vibration analysis, and thermal monitoring equipment
• Execute planned maintenance shutdowns while coordinating with operations team to maintain cooling redundancy
• Respond to critical chiller alarms and emergency cooling system failures with immediate technical expertise
• Maintain accurate logs of chiller performance data, energy consumption, and maintenance activities
• Support chiller retrofits, upgrades, and efficiency improvement projects
• Ensure compliance with refrigerant regulations, environmental standards, and safety protocols
Desired experience and technical skills:
Requirements:
• Minimum 5 years of experience with commercial/industrial chiller systems
• EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling certification (Type I, II, III, and Universal)
• Experience with centrifugal and screw chiller technologies from major manufacturers
• Knowledge of chilled water systems, cooling towers, and hydronic distribution networks
• Ability to read and interpret chiller schematics, control sequences, and technical manuals
• Proficiency with refrigerant leak detection, recovery, and system charging procedures
• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills for complex refrigeration systems
• Physical ability to work in mechanical rooms, confined spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs
• Availability for on-call emergency response and rotating shift coverage
Preferred:
• Data center or mission-critical facility experience
• Experience with Carrier, Trane, York, or Daikin chiller systems
• Knowledge of building automation systems and chiller plant optimization
• Certified Chiller Technician (CCT) or similar industry certification
• Experience with magnetic bearing centrifugal chillers and advanced control systems
• Associate degree in HVAC, Mechanical Engineering, or Refrigeration Technology
• Energy efficiency certification (CEM, CDSM, or equivalent)
