The Illinois Racing Board is looking to hire a new Chief State Steward.

The position is the presiding judge/official for live race meets in Illinois and is key to maintaining the integrity of racing. The Steward ensures the fairness of racing for the betting public and, in coordination with the State Veterinarians and other staff, oversees the general health of the horse population engaged in racing.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of the application of rules pertaining to violations concerning conduct and medication, applying the Horse Racing Act as it applies to the regulation of a pari-mutuel racing; anddetermining racing interference or lack thereof and taking appropriate corrective action when mandated by rules.

The mission of the Illinois Racing Board is to regulate horse racing through the enforcement of the Illinois Horse Racing Act of 1975 its rules, and regulations and to ensure the honesty and integrity of Illinois racing and wagering. Job Responsibilities

The Chief Steward position is the presiding judge/official for live race meets in Illinois and is key to maintaining the integrity of racing. The Chief Steward ensures the fairness of racing for the betting public and, in coordination with the State Veterinarians and other staff, oversees the general health of the horse population engaged in racing.

* Monitor and evaluate all live races for compliance with racing rules and regulations. This includes communicating the start and results of every race; reviewing races for potential violations; and scrutinizing betting pools for any possible irregularities.

* Adjudicate potential violations and report the activities of races. This includes conducting inquiries and determining necessary penalties under the illinois Horse Racing Act; generating race day reports of the conduct of the race program and end of meet reports summarizing key factors of the race meet.

* Coordinate with other race officials prior to the start of the daily race program and adjust as necessary to ensure the safety of participants and appropriate personnel are in place.

* Work with Board management and State Veterinarians to ensure procedures to protect equine health and compliance with rules regarding equine health and safety, including medication and drug administration. This may include coordination with the Illinois Department of Agriculture in cases of infectious disease outbreak, mandating health conditions necessary for horses to race, and selecting horse participants for post-race testing based on outcomes of races.

Preferred Qualifications

* College degree with emphasis in racetrack management preferred.

* Excellent writing and speaking skills.

* Ability to make sound, reasonable decisions in a high pressure, time-sensitive environment.

* Experience using Incompass preferred.

* Demonstrated ability to analyze race video for interference or subterfuge.

* Ability to evaluate potential licensees for suitability for licensure.

* Ability to become familiar with and proficient with the IRB proprietary database.

* Ability to become familiar with and consistently apply Board rules and regulations.
