Job Description

Position Summary

Tamarack Resort is seeking an experienced, strategic, and detail-oriented Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) to oversee all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CAO will lead the resort's accounting function across multiple lines of business, including lodging, real estate, hospitality, recreation, and seasonal activities. The ideal candidate brings deep technical accounting expertise, strong leadership, and a passion for the outdoor lifestyle that defines Tamarack. This position reports to the CFO and COO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed asset accounting functions.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and regulatory standards.
  • Prepare internal financial statements, variance analyses, and board-level reports.
  • Coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors.
  • Deliver clear, actionable financial insights to the CFO/COO and ownership group.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Business Unit Partnership

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in coordination with department leaders and operational units.
  • Develop rolling forecasts and financial models to support short- and long-term planning.
  • Collaborate closely with business unit leaders (e.g., lodging, food & beverage, golf, ski operations, real estate, and events) to align financial plans with operational realities and strategic objectives.
  • Provide financial training and insights to non-financial managers to foster accountability and ownership across departments.
  • Design, implement, and monitor effective internal controls across all departments.
  • Manage enterprise risk from a financial controls perspective, including fraud prevention and regulatory compliance.
  • Direct and mentor a team of accounting professionals, fostering growth and accountability.
  • Develop staffing plans and training for seasonal accounting demands.

Systems & Process Optimization

  • Evaluate and enhance accounting systems (e.g., ERP, POS, lodging, and real estate platforms).
  • Streamline cross-departmental workflows to support operational efficiency.
Strategic Support
  • Partner with the CFO/COO on cash flow management, capital project planning, investor reporting, and financial due diligence.
  • Support equity and debt financing initiatives, including EB-5 and preferred equity structures.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting leadership experience, preferably in hospitality, resort, real estate, or multi-entity environments.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and audit procedures.
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite) and hospitality POS/property management systems.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, develop processes, and manage complex financial operations.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to translate numbers into strategic insights.

Language Skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Preferred Attributes
  • Experience with real estate development and commission-based sales accounting.
  • Background in both public and private accounting environments.
  • Knowledge of seasonal business cycles and the operational complexity of a year-round resort.
  • Comfortable in a hands-on leadership role, capable of both strategic thinking and day-to-day execution.
