Overview
An established and expanding law firm in Serra Mesa is seeking an experienced Finance & Accounting Professional to serve as the financial right hand to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). This executive-level position will oversee all aspects of financial strategy, reporting, and operations, while also playing a key role in driving firm growth, profitability, and process optimization.
This is a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves role that requires both strategic insight and the ability to operate in the financial trenches. Must have prior experience in a Legal/Law firm industry with a deep understanding of Accounting, FP&A, Billing, and partner compensation.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the COO and Managing Partner to develop strategic and operational goals tied to firm expansion and performance.
- Introduce profitability and productivity analysis by attorney, practice group, and office location to support data-driven decision-making.
- Collaborate with the Managing Partner to evaluate and improve firmwide training programs to increase efficiency.
- Support the COO in long-range planning, organizational design, and operational risk management.
- Lead all finance operations: AP/AR, general ledger, bank reconciliations, payroll, and cash management.
- Oversee monthly financial reporting, partner/shareholder distributions, practice group performance analysis, and projection updates.
- Lead the firm's budgeting and forecasting cycles; present formal budgets and monthly performance results to the COO and Board.
- Prepare and file all federal, state, and local tax returns, including Schedule K-1s for the firm's Equity Partners.
- Work closely with outside CPA firms on tax returns, pension plans, 401(k) plans, and annual financial reviews.
- Spearhead implementation and integration of ERP and billing systems (e.g., Juris, Elite, Aderant); ensure data flows across finance and IT platforms are aligned for maximum productivity.
- Develop and maintain policy and procedures manuals across all departments.
- Analyze and resolve electronic billing rejections, minimize appeals, and streamline compliance with client billing protocols.
- Lead collections efforts, including monthly partner-level meetings to address aging receivables and cash flow strategy.
- Drive continuous improvement in the firm's financial health through accountability and actionable reporting.
- Manage and mentor the internal finance and accounting team.
- Support talent development, succession planning, and cross-functional leadership training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA Highly Preferred
- 10+ years of progressive leadership in accounting and finance
- Law firm experience required
- 6+ years in senior level finance position
- Expertise in financial modeling, budgeting, and strategic planning
- Experience with ERP and legal billing systems (e.g., Juris, Elite, Aderant, Clio)
- Deep knowledge of GAAP, trust accounting, collections, and compensation modeling
- Proven success in cross-departmental collaboration, particularly with IT and HR
- Willingness to be hands-on and actively engaged in the day-to-day financial functions
