The Medical Assistant (MA) provides support to physicians and other healthcare professionals by performing clinical and administrative tasks to ensure efficient patient care delivery. The MA works closely with patients, handling both front- and back-office functions in a fast-paced medical setting. The Medical Assistant functions under the direction of the Nurse Supervisor and/or Practice/Office Manager. Key responsibilities of the role include gathering and recording vital signs and other pertinent patient information for the visit, preparing patients for exams, assisting during treatments, coordinating tests and follow-up care, and recording treatment in the medical record. The MA recognizes patient's needs and symptoms in advance and responds appropriately, always keeping patient safety and the patient experience at the center of care delivery. The MA demonstrates competency and skills to serve patients of all ages. Performs other duties as necessary related to front office tasks and registration, laboratory and x-ray testing.
Exemplary Practice and Outcomes Provides patient care in accordance with recognized clinical practice guidelines and standards set forth by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or similar organizations. Adheres to federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as organizational and industry standards for clinical care. Upholds all health care system/organizational and WMG policies and procedures and clinical competencies put forth by this job description. Clinical and Non-Clinical Duties and Expectations Rotates among various clinical and non-clinical service areas such as lab, x-ray, and front office. Provides relationship-based, patient-centered care that is consistent with population-specific characteristics (e.g., age, gender, disease, etc.) in a manner that adapts service delivery to reflect an understanding of cultural diversity. Partners with the patient and significant others and/or family (as appropriate); keeping the patient at ease in the office through a collaborative and communicative approach to all care rendered. Registers patient upon entry to the facility. Prepares patient for the visit with the physicians/APPs. Prepares rooms and equipment, and aids physicians/APPs with treatment of patients. Carries out orders generated from the office visit. Responds to patient requests generated outside of the office visit. Maintains the safety needs of the patient at all times. Teamwork and Collaboration Collaborates with providers, nurses, and clinical staff to uphold continuity and consistency of care. Participates in daily huddles, staff meetings, and medical group, or system workgroups/committees to represent the voice of the medical assistant. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration by practicing in an inclusive manner that promotes the recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members. Participates in quality improvement initiatives to ensure alignment with best practices in medical assisting. May be asked to serve as a preceptor to assist in the onboarding and/or training of new team members, trainees, or students. Assists with cross-training of other team members. Professional Development and Initiative Completes all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments, required mandatory education, and population-specific education. Demonstrates leadership by identifying areas for improvement in care delivery and suggesting innovative solutions. Participates in workgroups, committees, and shared decision-making groups. Regularly reflects on personal performance and areas of strength or weakness. Uses this insight to seek out relevant training or mentorship to continuously improve. Resources and Support Supports efficient and effective use of material resources in a fiscally responsible manner. Minimizes waste of medical supplies and medications. Alerts supervisors or ordering staff when supplies are running low. May be asked to provide staffing coverage for absences, vacations, and leave. X-Ray Duties and Expectations Performs x-ray procedures to assist providers in the treatment of patients. Prepares and positions patients for x-ray procedures, ensuring all proper techniques, including radiation protection. Obtains optimum views as ordered by the provider. Processes images and reviews for proper identification and quality control. Completes and maintains logs, reports, and documentation. Laboratory Duties and Expectations Properly starts lab equipment daily, maintains daily logs, and required documentation. Responsible for specimen collection, including phlebotomy and Point of Care testing according to orders and appropriate collection and testing standards. Performs laboratory tests according to orders and instructions. Orders and stocks supplies weekly. Performs daily quality control and cleaning procedures according to guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education: High School Diploma General or GED General or Other / Certificate Medical Assisting
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated. CMA - Cert Medical Assistant BLS - Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor
Additional License(s) and Certification(s): Current certification from one of the following medical assisting credentialing bodies: AAMA (CMA), AMT (RMA), NHA (CCMA), NCCT (NCMA), NAHP (NRCMA) Upon Hire Required
Required Minimum Experience: Experience in the physician practice setting Preferred and Experience in the urgent care setting Preferred and Experience performing phlebotomy Preferred and Experience performing x-rays Preferred or Will provide training within the first 90 days
Required Minimum Skills: Must be able to work quickly and efficiently to assure patient comfort and satisfaction.
