Permanent Substitute Bus Driver Classification: School Bus Driver Location: Transportation Reports to: Director of Transportation Bargaining Unit: PSE Job Summary: The job of School Bus Driver is done for the purpose of transporting students over scheduled routes and/or special trips; enforcing rules, regulations, and laws to maintain safety during transport: ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district's curricular program. Required Qualifications: Ø Minimum of 21 years of age Ø High School Diploma or equivalent Ø Minimum of five (5) years of driving experience Ø WA State driver's license, with commercial driver's license (CDL), including passenger, school bus endorsements and non-air brake restriction Ø Clean driving abstract free of all major violations such as DUI or negligent driving with a limited number of minor violations Ø Ability to pass a physical examination as required under federal regulations Ø Evidence of School Bus Driver's Authorization, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Drug Testing Clearance, First Aid Certification Ø Ability to meet the physical and mental demands necessary to perform duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in the job description Ø Ability to communicate effectively, possess awareness of self and others, listen actively, be patient, incorporate humor/lightheartedness into work, be empathic, possess a growth mindset and be customer service oriented Ø Ability to support the District's vision, mission, goals and culture code including the believe that all students can succeed Ø Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations Ø This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing Preferred Qualifications/Eventual Competency: § Must be able to perform multiple non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions § Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including; adhering to safety practices; understanding applicable codes, policies, regulations and maintaining accurate records, knowledge of area streets and locations, emergency evacuation techniques, health standards and hazards Essential Job Functions: This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary and without notice. Depending upon individual assignments this position performs all or a combination of the following duties: § Drives all size and types of school buses in any type of traffic and weather condition, including fog, rain, snow and traffic congestion § Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure any vehicle driven is in safe operating condition and complying with mandated guidelines § Drives school bus in accordance with the laws established by the WA State Department of Licensing as well as the policies established by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the purpose of transporting students on scheduled routes to and from school as well as extracurricular activity trips § Concentrate on safety and defensive driving under various distracting circumstances § Communicate effectively using verbal, listening and writing skills. Including attention to detail and ability to accurately complete transportation/driver paperwork § Team oriented; ability to work with a variety of people including sensitivity to cultural, developmental, socioeconomic, religious and ethnic diversity of students, staff and community § Strong student management capabilities § Ability to establish rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, parents and community stakeholders § Reports observations and/or incidents (discipline, accidents, inappropriate behavior) in accordance with school district policies and procedures § Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guideline and maintaining passenger safety § Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and ethics, working cooperatively with program management, administrators, certificated and non-certificated staff, parents and students § Work cooperatively to support a successful team effort § Work collaboratively and respectfully with other team members and District staff § Possess clear communication skills, conflict management and resolution skills, fallibility, diplomacy, flexibility, patience, awareness (of self and others), and trustworthiness § Conducts emergency evacuation drills inn accordance with OSPI policies § Other duties as assigned Salary: $26.91 to $33.09 per hour, DOE Work schedule: At least 5.0 hours per day (will vary depending on route) - 192 days per year including 11 holidays Benefits: 11 paid holidays; 12 sick leave days; 3 personal days; health benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability insurance; State retirement; other fringe benefits as outlined in the Public School Employees' Collective Bargaining Agreement.
