Basic Function And Scope Of Responsibilities

The Campus Director of Financial Aid & Operations plays a key role in advancing financial aid services at Long Island University. This position oversees daily operations, strengthens operational processes, drives compliance and process improvements, and develops staff while ensuring adherence to federal, state, and institutional regulations.

Working collaboratively across Admissions, Registrar, Academic Affairs, and related areas, the Campus Director anticipates and resolves enrollment challenges, implements policies and ensures efficient policy implementation and operational consistency.

The Director also partners closely with the PeopleSoft Director to strengthen technology and process improvements, overseeing key Financial Aid system functions (batch processing, ad hoc queries, and system enhancements), coordinating IT testing and upgrades, and designing workflows to automate operations. In this role, the Campus Director also provides leadership in packaging, disbursement, reconciliation, and refund processes to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and compliance across federal, state, and institutional aid programs.

A central focus of this role is advancing LIU's mission of affordability and accessibility by maximizing financial aid resources, reducing barriers, and supporting student success.

Principal Responsibilities

Leadership & Compliance

  • Provide leadership and oversight of all Financial Aid operations at the Brooklyn campus, ensuring high-quality service delivery and compliance with university, federal, and state standards.
  • Act as a bridge between student support services and financial aid administration by implementing financial aid policies, enhancing operational efficiency, and providing staff training to improve operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Campus Director of Financial Aid & Operations (Post Campus) to streamline policies, procedures, and compliance practices across both campuses.
  • Foster a collaborative environment through staff training, professional development, and process improvements that enhance efficiency and service to students.
  • Collaborate with the Registrar's Office to support transcript processing, enrollment verification, and student record management.
  • Develops, implements, and enforces financial aid policies to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Oversees resolution protocols for financial aid cases, ensuring staff apply policies consistently and in compliance with regulations.
  • Advises senior leadership on financial aid operations and risk management.
  • Ensure bulletins, websites, and public resources reflect the most current compliance requirements.
  • Advise university leadership on financial aid policies, procedures, and opportunities for operational improvement.

Operations & Process Improvement

  • Oversees daily operations, directs staff performance, drives process and system improvements, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Support automation and technology enhancements to improve financial aid and registrar-related processes.
  • Oversees and ensures accuracy of financial aid packaging and adjustments through staff supervision and compliance monitoring.
  • Leads automation initiatives to streamline verification, reconciliation, and disbursement processes.
  • Coordinates with IT and systems teams to test, implement, and optimize PeopleSoft functionality.

Staff Development & Training

  • Build and mentor a dedicated Brooklyn campus financial aid team, fostering a culture of operational excellence, accountability, and compliance.
  • Establishes performance benchmarks and conducts ongoing staff training in compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Represent the office at university events, including open houses, athletic events, and orientation sessions, with an emphasis on public speaking to effectively communicate with students and families.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Compile and analyze campus financial aid data to drive decision-making and improve operational effectiveness.
  • Use data insights to identify gaps in affordability and access, recommending policy adjustments that align with LIU's mission of expanding educational opportunity.
  • Prepare reports on financial aid trends, student demographics, and aid disbursement to inform policy development and procedural improvements.
  • Oversees compliance reporting to federal, state, and accrediting agencies.
  • Provides leadership with operational dashboards to monitor efficiency, compliance, and aid distribution trends.

Education Requirements

Master's Degree Required.

Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience

  • 7-10 years of progressive professional experience in higher education, student affairs or financial aid administration.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with university departments and leadership.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Familiarity with database management systems, e.g., Peoplesoft.

Working Conditions

  • Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
  • Occasional travel between LIU campuses for training, meetings, and university functions.
