Call for Contributors (Western Balkans Center)Call for Contributors (Western Balkans Center)

The Western Balkans Center (WBC) of the New Lines Institute exists to reshape Euro‑Atlantic policy discourse on the Western Balkans. We link regional experts with decision‑makers in Washington, London, Brussels, and beyond. We disseminate rigorous, policy‑relevant analysis and cultivate the next generation of Western Balkans specialists.

The WBC is looking for Western Balkans experts and contributors to expand its intellectual perimeter by producing sharp, evidence‑driven content for the Regional Watch series.

The Regional Watch series provides timely analysis of recent or unfolding developments in the Western Balkans. Each piece in the series focuses on a pressing issue and offers insight into why it matters now. The Regional Watch series is policy-oriented, written with a strategic audience in mind, particularly policymakers in Washington, London, and Brussels.Articles in the series analyze, contextualize, and communicate the significance of an event or trend, making a compelling case for why it demands the attention of the policy community.

Responsibilities

  • Write original analytical articles for the WBC's Regional Watch series (500-600 words per article).
  • Ensure that proposed topics examine geopolitically relevant issues and speak directly to the vision, mission, and principles of the WBC.
  • Ensure that recommendations in the written work advance policy options for the U.S. national security and international stability vis-à-vis the Western Balkan countries.
  • Ensure tone, framing, and style are consistent with the Institute's editorial guidelines.
  • Ensure that written work steers clear of any form of ideologically motivated policy advocacy.
  • Actively participate in the editorial process, including timely responses to suggestions and comments of the Institute's Editorial Team.
  • The written work must not be submitted simultaneously to any other publication, nor already been published elsewhere in any language online or in print.
  • The written work must be entirely original, with sufficient source citations. The WBC has a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism.

Qualifications

  • A track record of producing sharp, timely, and relevant analysis on the Western Balkans.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the socio-political dynamics in the Western Balkans.
  • A Bachelor's or an advanced degree in Political Science, International Relations, or similar fields.
  • Ability to work efficiently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proven ability to write for a policy-making audience with clarity, precision, and urgency.
  • Knowledge of local languages (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin, Albanian) is desirable, but not necessary.
