Salary: $18,333.00 - $31,166.00 Annually Location : Chesterfield, VA Job Type: 183 days, 6.0 hours per day Job Number: 15642 Department: OP - Student Transportation Opening Date: 04/04/2025 FLSA: Non-Exempt General Description Responsible for the supervision and safety of children on a special education school bus during its operation. Assists students aboard and exiting school bus using special equipment or devices based on the unique needs of specific children in relationship to their disabilities. Performs functions with little or no supervision. Bus attendants should be knowledgeable about child development for children with and without special needs. Essential Job Functions:
  • Serves as an attendant on the school bus. Assists students who are ambulatory or non-ambulatory aboard and exiting school bus; uses special equipment or special devices (e.g., power lifts, child safety restraint systems such as child safety seat, safety vests and integrated seats, related securement systems, including vest mounting and safety belts, wheelchairs and wheelchair tie downs and occupant restraint systems) based on the unique needs of specific children in relationship to their disabilities and confidential transportation requirements as indicated on the IEP. Participates in evacuation and practice evacuation drills.
  • Manages student behavior and enforces safety and conduct regulations using age-appropriate physical handling, communication and behavior management techniques.
  • Provides basic first-aid and/or prescribed health care as necessary for special needs students on the vehicle (e.g., apnea, asthma or other respiratory conditions, life threatening allergies and their triggers, assistive devices, communicable diseases, g-tubes, shunts, oxygen, technological dependence, tracheostomy tubes, medical devices, medically complex and fragile conditions, uncontrollable seizure disorders and Do Not Resuscitate DNR orders).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Budgetary Responsibility:N/A Report Preparation: Completes and submits weekly reports that include, but are not limited to, student behavior, bus activity, injury and vandalism. Equipment Operation: To perform this job successfully, daily use and operation of specialized equipment, such as wheelchair lifts, securement devices, positioning devices, child safety restraint systems, etc., as well as securing adaptive and assistive devices. Contacts: Daily contact with the bus driver, student transportation coordinator and Assistant Director of Student Transportation. Work Direction: N/A Supervision: N/A Decision Making: Makes independent decisions as needed in supervising students to and from school; make decisions within the guidelines of the division's Code of Conduct related to inappropriate behavior. Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities: N/A Physical Demands: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk and hear; use hands to finger; handle or feel objects; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; stand, walk and smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a moving vehicle and is exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud and the employee is exposed to environmental and health factors associated with supervising students on a school bus. Qualifications Some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and related local exceptional education and school board policies. Some knowledge of first aid procedures including CPR. Demonstrated ability to maintain bus discipline, as well as, provide constant attention and assistance to a number of children at the same time, especially children with special health conditions or disabilities. Demonstrated ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting children. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures and prepare basic reports. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents tactfully, calmly and compassionately in sensitive, stressful situations in a confidential manner. Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must successfully complete CPR and basic first-aid course upon entry into the position.
