Salary : $78,894.00 Annually Location : Grand Forks City Hall- 255 N 4th St Grand Forks, ND Job Type: Contract - Non-Exempt Job Number: 202500591 Department: Building Safety Opening Date: 08/04/2025 Closing Date: 8/22/2025 5:00 PM Central FLSA: Non-Exempt Description The City of Grand Forks is seeking a full-time Electrical Inspector. This role involves inspecting electrical installations and ensuring compliance with the National Electrical Code and state regulations. The successful candidate will be responsible for working across various assigned areas in the City, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to high-quality customer service. Examples of Duties Essential Functions: 1. Perform inspection on new and existing installations on electrical; verify completeness of installation, quality of workmanship and recommend revisions to existing installations; issue Stop Work Orders as delegated. 2. Approve new installations and equipment for connection to utility services; disconnect utility services to existing code-violating or unsafe installations and equipment. 3. Maintain daily records of inspections performed and corrective actions taken; prepare a variety of reports on activities and operations; maintain permanent records, diagrams and as-built drawings. 4. Confer with and advise architects, engineers, contractors, utility companies, other code officials and the general public in the field and office; explain and interpret code requirements and restrictions. Notify appropriate contractors of licensing requirements; issue written examinations and renewal of licenses as required. 5. Examine plans and specifications of new construction additions and alterations to residential and commercial buildings to determine compliance with the provisions of codes, ordinances and regulations. 6. Review new codes and ordinances for electrical systems; prepare code adopting ordinances. 7. Review and evaluate equipment, materials and methods used for installation procedures. 8. Act as official department representative within assigned trade area; respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Participate in public speaking engagements and presentations relative to assigned trade area at meetings and events. 9. Compute and collect fees for various permits, hook-ups and connections; complete, issue and update permits as necessary. 10. Attend and participate in City, State and professional board meetings and committees; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in assigned trade field. 11. Resolve inspection issues and concerns raised between outside parties; meet with involved parties to review and confirm issues, make recommendations to resolve concerns. 12. Investigate complaints and concerns from the general public within assigned trade area; explain applicable code requirements; determine appropriate corrective action to achieve code compliance. 13. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required by department leadership. Typical QualificationsKnowledge: All types of building construction methods, practices, materials and standards; Stages of construction where possible violations and defects may be detected and corrected; Complex principles and techniques of inspection and plans examining work within assigned trade area; Methods, practices, tools and equipment required in assigned trade area installations; Advanced techniques used in the testing for defects within assigned area; Accepted safety standards and methods of construction within assigned trade area; City geography and layout; Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers; Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations within assigned trade area. Skills: Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities; Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties. Abilities: Independently perform inspection tasks relative to assigned trade area; Inspect and detect faulty installations and hazardous conditions within assigned area; Interpret, explain and enforce applicable codes, ordinances and regulations; Prepare clear and concise reports; Make mathematical computations rapidly and accurately; Operate office equipment including computers and supporting accessories; Read and interpret complex plans, specifications and codes; Evaluate existing conditions and make timely on-site decisions; Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials and detect deviations from plans, regulations and standard construction practices; Enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact; Work independently in the absence of supervision. Supplemental Information Experience: Five or more years of increasingly responsible experience within the plumbing, electrical or mechanical field, which ever applies to trade inspection area or related field. (At least six years of experience, may be required to comply with the ND State Master licensing requirements that applies to inspection trade area the inspector is hired for). Training: Equivalent to an Associates degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in applied science or a related field. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Electrician's licenses ( Licensed Journeyman electrician capable of becoming a Master electrician). Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year an ICC Electrical Examiner Certificate as each applies to inspection trade area inspector is hired for. Possession of or ability to obtain within one year an ICC Electrical Certificate *Note both Residential and Commercial must be obtained for the above requirements* The City of Grand Forks offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include participation in the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System.
