JOB SUMMARYThe Building Substitute - School Support is a full-time substitute assigned to a single school building, serving as a flexible team member to meet the daily operational and instructional needs of the school. This role is not limited to classroom coverage; the substitute may assist withstudent supervision, instructional support, administrative tasks, testing coordination, or emergency coverage for non-certified staff. The position ensures the smooth day-to-day functioning of the school building and contributes to a safe, productive learning environment.Reports to: Building PrincipalSupervises: NonePay Grade: ClassifiedESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSInstructional & Classroom Coverage (as needed):* Serve as the substitute for classroom teachers during short-term or unplanned absences.* Implement lesson plans or instructional activities provided by teachers or instructional coaches.* Maintain order, manage student behavior, and uphold school policies and expectations.* Supervise students independently or with co-teachers/paraprofessionals.Schoolwide Operational Support:* Provide coverage and support in non-classroom roles, including:* Front office assistance* Health office aide (non-medical tasks)* Library/media center supervision* In-school suspension room monitor* Resource rooms or intervention labs* Support lunchroom supervision, hallway monitoring, arrival/dismissal routines, or recess duties.Administrative and Testing Support:* Assist in the setup, monitoring, and collection of materials for:* Benchmark assessments* MAP testing* Classroom-based assessments or progress monitoring* Help with filing, copying, hallway passes, inventory, or bulletin boards when instructional coverage is not needed.Student and Staff Support:* Build positive relationships with students and staff to maintain consistent routines and expectations.* Offer support to teachers, counselors, specialists, or interventionists during classroom instruction or small-group pull-outs.* Help implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs), individual learning plans (IEPs/504s), or academic accommodations when appropriate.Emergency and Flexible Response:* Respond to last-minute needs such as:* Escorting students* Covering brief teacher absences (e.g., IEP meetings, emergencies)* Assisting with crisis response (e.g., lockdown, drills)* Serve as a reliable presence for unpredictable or evolving building needs.All duties assignedKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES* Adaptable and flexible to meet changing daily priorities* Strong communication and interpersonal skills* Comfortable with technology (email, Google Classroom, classroom tech tools)* Reliable attendance and a commitment to supporting the school community* Ability to work with diverse student populations and staff teams* Maintains confidentiality and professionalism at all timesEXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONRequired:* Valid Missouri Substitute Teaching Certificate or Missouri Teaching Certificate* High school diploma required; 60+ college credit hours or completion of DESE-approved substitute training* Pass a criminal background check and fingerprint clearance* Minimum age 21Preferred:* Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in education, child development, or related field* Previous experience in school or youth-serving environments* Familiarity with school-wide PBIS, trauma-informed practices, or MTSS frameworksREQUIREMENTPhysical demandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
