DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is a training level classification in the Building Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents in this class will gain hands on experience and learn to perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of County buildings and related machinery and equipment. Incumbents will be provided training to assist with performing the more skilled assignments under close supervision. As incumbents demonstrate broader skills and experience, it is expected that most incumbents in this class will be promoted to the Building Maintenance Worker I level. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.
  • Receives training to assist with performing a variety of skilled, semiskilled, and non-skilled work related to the maintenance and repair of County buildings and grounds.
  • Assist with basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work under supervision.
  • Learns and assists with building modifications and minor construction work.
  • Receives instruction in and performs work involved in the cleaning and care of the County buildings and facilities.
  • Maintains the assigned areas in a clean, orderly and safe condition under guidance.
  • Trains in the proper handling, moving and arrangement of furniture and equipment.
  • Assist with the care and maintenance of equipment and materials used in work assignments.
  • Learn to mow edge and maintain lawns and other ground areas.
  • Assists in trimming trees, shrubs and hedges.
  • Waters landscaped and ground areas as directed.
  • Trains in the operation of various irrigation systems and equipment.
  • Will learn how to and assist with landscaping and gardening.
  • Participates in minor repair and remodeling of County buildings.
  • Aids in inspecting buildings and facilities to identify needed repairs.
  • Trains in and assists with completing and maintenance records and reports accurately.
Essential QualificationsKnowledge of:
  • Basic knowledge of some landscaping and construction trades.
  • Basic computer skills and email and internet use.
  • Standard tools, methods, practices, and materials involved in one of the building trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical.
  • General safety practices and procedures in the construction and maintenance settings.
  • Routine maintenance techniques of tools, machinery and equipment.
  • Potential hazards and proper safety precautions related to the building maintenance trades.
Ability to:
  • Learn to perform a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled building trades work.
  • Effectively manage time and prioritize tasks.
  • Acquire knowledge of basic building, electrical, and plumbing codes as applicable to the work
  • Safely use a variety of building trades tools and equipment.
  • Recognize and locate conditions which require maintenance and repair work.
  • Use and care for hand and power tools utilized in the building trades.
  • Estimate time and materials needed to perform maintenance, construction, and repair jobs.
  • Follow direction and complete tasks based on written and verbal instructions.
  • Read and write English.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations at the level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSFrequently sit for extended periods; stand and walk or crouch on narrow, slippery, and erratically moving surfaces; stoop, kneel, bend to pick up or move objects; physical ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of lawn mowing equipment, hand and power tools, and a variety of building trades, tools, and equipment.TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed both in office and outdoor environments; some exposure to controlled and hazardous substances, pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals; continuous contact with staff and the public. Training and ExperienceAny combination of training which would likely provide the required knowledge and experience is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:EducationA high school diploma or GED equivalent. If still in high school, then proof that you are in attendance in good standing, and that you are on course to graduate, preferably with a 2.0 GPA or better. Showing that you've taken shop classes is desirable. ExperienceOne (1) year of experience in building and ground maintenance work, whether as an employee or not, is highly desirable.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPossession of a valid California Driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
