Opportunity at a Glance The Village of Tinley Park (population approx. 56,000) seeks qualified applicants to join the very busy Building Division in a newly approved full-time position of Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer in the Community Development Department. The Community Development Department is comprised of three divisions: economic development, planning and building. All three divisions work together to strengthen and improve development services to its customers and the quality of life in Tinley Park. The Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer, a multi-discipline inspector, is responsible for reviewing building plans and specifications for new and existing residential, commercial, and industrial structures to ensure compliance with Village and Illinois State Building Codes. This position performs a variety of inspections requiring thorough knowledge and skill for the enforcement of all applicable codes and ordinances in a variety of areas to include, but not limited to building, mechanical, plumbing, zoning, signs and property maintenance inspections. Key Responsibilities This important role will function as on-site inspector performing complete all-encompassing inspections for ascertaining compliance with the Building code and other codes in a variety of areas to include: electrical, mechanical, plumbing, signs, zoning and property maintenance; ascertain, denote and report violations, issue appropriate violation notices and make subsequent re-inspections as required. Will regularly review all types of building permit applications for conformance with applicable codes and ordinances, particularly those not requiring plans and detailed specifications; assist builders, contractors, and others in permit application completion; answer public inquiries regarding codes and safety standards; and respond to public complaints regarding non-compliance with codes of possible defective and potentially unsafe building and housing conditions. This position will also assist the Building Official in reviewing plans and making code interpretation determinations in cases where question exist. Additionally, this individual recommends amendments to various codes and ordinances; attends meetings with contractors to review problems with various construction projects regarding construction and code compliance; identifies and Issues notices of violations in writing to responsible parties in violation of building and construction regulations under provisions of Village and State Plumbing Codes; compiles evidence for prosecution of violators of building codes; prepares and submits related code sections of code violations that may pertain to court hearings, along with any additional related job duties as assigned. Qualifications, Knowledge, SkillsBachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction along with a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in the building trades, construction, code enforcement, civil engineering, public works, architecture, or related field is highly preferred. Prior experience conducting plan reviews is required. Prior experience as a certified electrical inspector and/or licensed electrician is a plus. A valid driver's license is required. An International Code Council Certification (ICC) is required within six (6) months of employment if not in possession upon application.The ideal candidate will possess an outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and be self-motivated. They will have the ability to read, understand and interpret building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing plans, blueprints, diagrams, and specifications, as well as read, interpret, and apply codes, laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. They will be able to conduct plan reviews and make recommendations. Must exhibit excellent written and oral communication, along with a professional attitude and appearance. Experience with preparing reports, maintaining accurate files and testifying in court is necessary.
