**Background:**

Dia Art Foundation was established in 1974 for the purpose of collecting, commissioning, and presenting major works of art made in the 1960s onward. Today it consists of eight permanent sites across the United States and Germany, as well as three changing exhibition spaces in New York State: Dia Chelsea in New York City, Dia Beacon in the Hudson Valley, and Dia Bridgehampton on Long Island. Dia is taken from the Greek word for through and conveys the foundations role as a facilitator of meaningful artistic experiences that can be encountered in single and repeated visits.

**Position Summary:**

Dia Beacons Bookshop staff provide articulate information to the public as well as protect the interest and property of Dia Beacon. The primary responsibilities of the Part-time Bookshop Attendant are to assist visitors with their bookshop inquiries and purchases and answer general questions about Dia Beacon and the Hudson Valley region. This position requires a familiarity with Dia Art Foundations programming, knowledge of contemporary art and strong customer service skills. The Part-time Bookshop Attendant works closely with the Visitor Services team. Candidates should be well-organized, and able to set a professional standard for the bookshop and entrance area of the museum.

This 14-hour per week position primarily works on Fridays and Sundays and covers for full-time staff time off, as needed.

**Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:**

* Assist with daily store operations, sales, opening and closing procedures

* Maintain extensive knowledge of inventory

* Assist with inventory management, including assisting annual inventory count

* Assist loss-prevention

* Create a visitor friendly atmosphere, facilitate sales, operate point-of-sales systems

* Maintain physical appearance of the store and surrounding areas

* Assist with store merchandising

* Maintain knowledge of shipping and receiving policies

* Answer the bookshop telephone extension and respond to email inquiries

* Provide accurate information about Dia history, programming, and policies

* Use formal language and always have professional attitude toward Dias visitors

* Provide membership information

* Apprise the bookshop manager of low stock levels for popular titles

**General/Other Responsibilities and Duties:**

* Assist with all group visits

* Meet and greet visitors as they enter the museum

* Provide regional information, MTA information, driving directions, etc.

* Assist all departments with programming and fundraising events

* Inform visitors of Dias security and museum policies

* Always be ready to react according to staff manual in emergency situations

* Assist with general maintenance

* Keep bookshop and surrounding areas organized, clean, and neat

* Maintain a safe environment for the general public

**Education, Certification, Experience:**

* High school diploma preferred

* Work experience in a museum or coursework in art history

* Retail Experience

**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:**

* Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills

* Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment

* Good math skills

* Knowledge of Dias history and programing a plus

* Knowledge of the Hudson Valley Region

**Working Conditions and Physical Demands:**

* Work is performed in a busy bookstore/retail environment. Frequent standing, walking, lifting and computer usage.

* Ability to lift at least 30lbs
