The Biosafety Officer promotes and ensures safe environments exist for research in labs conducting biological research through developing collaborative internal policies focused on managing work-associated risks and having a comprehensive understanding of processes, hazards, training, monitoring, and in risk management. In addition, the Biosafety Officer ensures compliance with State and Federal regulations regarding the use, storage, and disposal of biologicals used by the University's (Uptown, Downtown, and East Campuses) laboratories in research and education.

Primary Responsibilities:

* Manages the University's biosafety and programs: including blood-borne pathogen exposure control and other biosafety initiatives, policy updates, and employee training.

* Promotes biosafety programs in compliance with various laws, regulatory agencies, and standards impacting biological safety in the workplace.

* Supports and serves as a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), advising researchers on the requirements and application of all regulations and guidelines; submitting all required reports.

* Serves as a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human subjects and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

* Bio-waste coordinator for University.

* Reviews campus purchase orders for specialized safety equipment including biological safety cabinets, etc.

* Develop and maintain databases or other tools applicable to biological safety programs.

* Develops, maintains, and disseminates information and technical guidelines regarding the analysis and evaluation of biological safety issues.

* Develops and maintains biological hygiene manuals for the campus.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry

* Two (2) years of experience in a research environment including active laboratory. experience in microbiology and/or molecular biology, chemistry or organic chemistry

* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with a team and communicate clearly and effectively through verbal and written communication.

* Experience with laboratory science safety, occupational safety, and risk assessments

* Must have the ability to wear a respirator.

* Ability/Willingness to travel between University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline

* Five (5) years of professional experience in a biological safety program in a research environment including active laboratory experience in microbiology and/or molecular biology.

* Professional experience in specific areas of laboratory science safety, occupational safety, and risk assessments.

* Experience providing training/instruction.
