Purpose & Impact:

The Behavioral Support Specialist plays a crucial role in managing the behaviors of preschool-aged children. You will train and coach staff and parents, provide case management services, and connect families with mental health and psycho-educational support. Your expertise will directly influence the development and implementation of interventions, monitor children's progress, and offer parents vital resources, ensuring a supportive network is established.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support parents in accessing resources and conduct in-home follow-ups to foster consistency between home and school environments.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary case management meetings and collaborate with team members to develop effective strategies.
  • Deliver case management services by referring families to mental health providers and community resources.
  • Assist educators in understanding and applying Behavior Support Plans tailored for individual children.
  • Conduct regular observations and assessments to monitor children's developmental progress and behavior management.
  • Provide teachers with coaching on implementing the Trust-Based Relational Intervention Model (TBRI).
  • Perform crisis intervention when necessary to maintain a safe environment for children.
  • Assist in reviewing Behavior Support Plans created by mental health professionals and ensure their effective execution.
  • Attend required meetings, workshops, and training sessions to continuously enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff according to established policies.
  • Take on other related duties as assigned to support the overarching mission.

Qualifications:

Health and Safety: LSF is dedicated to providing a safe work environment. Employees are expected to adhere to all safety procedures, report unsafe conditions, and maintain strict supervision of children.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift at least 45 lbs. Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Education: A Bachelor's degree in educational psychology, mental health counseling, special education, social work, or a related field is required. A Master's degree is preferred. Applicants must complete specific training within two years of hire, which will be covered by the agency.

Experience: Minimum one year of experience in mental health services for children, particularly preschool-aged children with behavioral issues. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or other languages) are preferred.

Certification in First Aid and CPR is required within six months of hire, and candidates must successfully complete a Level II background screening, local criminal record check, and drug screening prior to hiring.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques and child development.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with parents, staff, and the community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with mental health and psycho-educational services.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by low-income families and the importance of cultural dynamics.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail, with the capability to meet deadlines.
