The Behavioral Health Security Specialist provides security services to Inpatient Psychiatry Units or the Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) by courteously assisting staff, visitors, and patients; enforcing VCUHS rules and regulations; projecting a positive image; and promoting a safe healthcare environment. This is a non-sworn security position.
The specialist engages in proactive violence prevention and training to support the mission of the Inpatient Psychiatry Units, VTCC, and VCUHS. Responsibilities include calming agitated patients, resolving risky situations, and enhancing safety and customer service through innovative programs and training.
Minimum Requirements:
- Valid Virginia Driver's License with an acceptable driving record (if duties require operating a vehicle)
- At least three (3) years of security, public safety, or law enforcement experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five (5) years of relevant experience
- Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
- Training or certification in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and violence prevention
Key Responsibilities:
- De-escalate agitated patients individually and as part of a team
- Evaluate physical environment to develop patient management strategies
- Prevent potentially risky or violent situations
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with extended hours as needed
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Physical: Lift 20-50 lbs, prolonged standing and sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching, physical intervention when necessary
- Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking
- Emotional: Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, multiple priorities, customer interactions, noise, and change
