Minimum Salary - 136,000.00

Key Accountabilities:

As Assistant Vice President, Inland Marine Underwriting, you will play a central role in shaping the direction of the Inland Marine portfolio. Your day-to-day activities will involve managing key relationships with agents and brokers across your territory while overseeing the underwriting process for complex accounts. You will be instrumental in developing new products and refining existing offerings through collaboration with cross-functional teams. By mentoring junior colleagues and participating in special projects, you will help foster a culture of continuous improvement. Your responsibilities will also include auditing premium calculations for accuracy, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, monitoring portfolio performance against financial targets, and acting as a trusted technical resource for both internal teams and external partners. Success in this role requires not only deep technical knowledge but also excellent communication skills and a genuine passion for supporting others' growth.

  • Manage an assigned underwriting territory by building and maintaining strong relationships with agents, brokers, and other stakeholders to support profitable business growth.
  • Oversee the underwriting of complex accounts within authority levels, ensuring adherence to established guidelines and best practices.
  • Contribute actively to product development initiatives, including form creation and rate calibration, to enhance the Inland Marine offering.
  • Coach, train, and mentor junior staff members by sharing technical expertise and supporting their professional development within the team.
  • Participate in special projects that drive operational improvements or strategic objectives across the business unit.
  • Audit premium calculations and resolve any discrepancies or issues related to premium audits in accordance with company standards.
  • Utilize internal standards, practices, and tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges for new and existing business.
  • Review relevant laws and regulations pertaining to cancellation, non-renewal protocols, and compliance requirements within assigned locations.
  • Monitor portfolio performance through regular analysis of functional results to identify trends, influence progress towards objectives, and ensure alignment with business goals.
  • Represent the function as a technical expert by providing guidance on complex transactions, supporting project teams, and ensuring solutions meet functional needs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Experience:

To excel as Assistant Vice President, Inland Marine Underwriting you will bring substantial experience in managing complex insurance portfolios within the Inland Marine sector. Your background should reflect hands-on expertise in risk assessment, policy negotiation, product development initiatives, compliance oversight, stakeholder relationship management, mentoring junior practitioners, process optimization efforts within teams or departments—alongside an unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality service. Your proven track record should demonstrate not only technical proficiency but also interpersonal sensitivity when collaborating across functions or engaging externally. A keen eye for detail coupled with strong analytical thinking will allow you to navigate regulatory landscapes confidently while driving operational excellence throughout your remit.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with AAIS Forms as well as comprehensive knowledge of Inland Marine coverages gained through at least five years of dedicated experience.
  • Proven understanding of relevant laws associated with underwriting Inland Marine policies including cancellation and non-renewal protocols.
  • Adeptness at risk selection, exposure evaluation, rating, quoting, and selling both admitted and non-admitted solutions for Marine lines of business.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities combined with very strong analytical skills that enable effective management of multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required for interacting with various levels of the organization as well as external partners such as brokers or agents.
  • Strong customer service orientation paired with a professional attitude that supports positive stakeholder engagement across wholesale and retail channels.
  • Experience managing a book of significant size demonstrating clear progression in scope of responsibility over time.
  • Proficiency in standard computer programs including Word, Excel, Outlook; ability to quickly adapt to new systems or tools as needed for workflow efficiency.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; AMIM or CPCU designations preferred but not mandatory.
  • Willingness to travel as required by business needs.
