We are seeking a highly skilled leader, Assistant Vice President (AVP) of AI and Data Engineering, to join our Employee Benefits data team. The ideal candidate has experience in developing scalable data environments, launching data products, enabling AI/ML solutions, and shaping data analytics strategies. The AVP will lead the development and implementation of advanced AI and data engineering solutions to drive business transformation and enhance customer experiences.

This role requires strategic thinking, expertise in data engineering practices, knowledge of AI technologies, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams. The candidate should be versed in real-time data streaming, agentic frameworks, Data APIs, vector stores, and RAG architectures, with a proven track record of enabling self-serve analytics and AI use cases.

The AVP will promote a data-driven culture and the adoption of AI technologies to improve our data platform and deliver value to our members. They will lead transformational initiatives, guide innovative technologies/products for better business outcomes through automation and AI. This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic data leader to shape the future of The Hartford.

This role offers a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates living near our office locations are expected to work in-office 3 days a week (Tuesday-Thursday). Those who do not live near an office can work remotely, with occasional in-office visits as needed. Candidates must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Strategy: Lead enterprise-wide data strategy aligned with AI-driven transformation goals. Oversee data architecture standards, develop scalable data consumption patterns, and drive AI solutions innovation. Communicate strategy and progress effectively to stakeholders and promote data capabilities through thought leadership.
  • Data modernization: Create a roadmap to modernize legacy data platforms to a strategic cloud platform, solving current data complexities and enabling data products for all stakeholders.
  • Real-Time Data Streaming: Design and maintain scalable real-time data pipelines for ingestion, processing, and delivery. Extract insights from unstructured data and integrate with structured sources for comprehensive analytics.
  • Third-Party Data Exchange: Collaborate with Technology teams to implement data exchange strategies with TPAs.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Build, mentor, and lead high-performing data engineering and architecture teams.
  • Efficiency & Productivity: Identify and implement developer productivity enhancements, including AI-driven auto-generation of ETL pipelines, advanced DevOps practices, and automated data quality frameworks.
  • Data Infrastructure: Oversee design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines, warehouses, and lakes.
  • AI/ML Enablement: Architect data solutions supporting AI and machine learning models focused on operational efficiency and customer experience.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Translate data needs into technical requirements in partnership with business stakeholders.
  • Technology Evaluation: Stay current with emerging trends in data engineering and AI/ML, recommending innovative tools and technologies.
  • Data Governance & Compliance: Implement frameworks for data management, quality, and governance to facilitate effective data use.
  • Budget Management: Manage the budget for the AI Data Engineering function.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor and optimize data pipeline and infrastructure performance.
  • Qualifications
    • Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field.
    • 15+ years in data engineering, designing large-scale data ecosystems.
    • At least 3 years in senior leadership roles managing teams and initiatives.
    • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Deep expertise in data architecture patterns, data lakes, warehouses, and cloud technologies.
    • Experience integrating ML solutions with cloud platforms like AWS SageMaker and GCP Vertex AI.
    • Technical proficiency in LLMs, Generative AI, RAG architectures, vector databases, and AI agent development.
    • Hands-on experience with GCP, Cloud AI, Vertex AI, BigQuery, LangChain, and building AI agents.
    • Knowledge of hybrid data lake-houses involving multiple cloud vendors.
    • Strong ability to communicate complex AI/ML concepts to business leaders.
    • Experience with computer vision, NLP, and multimodal language modeling.
    • Understanding of Generative AI concepts and LLM applications in automotive contexts.
    • Proficiency in unstructured data mining and content summarization.
    • Experience designing complex data ecosystems leveraging cloud technologies across AWS and GCP, preferably in financial services or insurance industries.
    Compensation

    The annual base pay range is estimated based on market data and may vary depending on performance, skills, and competencies. The range is $182,000 - $273,000, with additional incentives and benefits included in the total compensation package.
