Job DescriptionPerforms a variety of basic automotive tasks that are semi-skilled and labor intensive in the areas of tire service, auto body service, and general shop and lot service. Performs minor repairs and adjustments to buses, trucks, automobiles, and equipment. Operates trucks, automobiles, and equipment. Assists other transportation maintenance employees in a variety of shop or bus lot locations. Performs other duties as assigned of similar scope and complexity.ResponsibilitiesEXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  • Check and fill various automotive fluids and fuels, replace filters, grease automotive chassis and mechanical equipment.
  • Mount, balance, and repair tires. Deliver tires and parts as needed. Maintain tire inventory for stock.
  • Install batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fuses, seat covers and other basic items.
  • Assist auto body mechanic in a variety of semi-skilled tasks from sanding, prep, vehicle detailing, masking, panel repair/removal and replacement.
  • Clean vehicles and equipment. Clean and care for tools and related equipment.
  • Assist with replacement or repair of damaged body parts.
  • Assist and respond to calls for road service and breakdowns.
  • Drive trucks, automobiles, and equipment.
  • Assist other transportation maintenance employees in the repair and reconditioning of all types of automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Keep accurate records of work performed, materials used, and fuels dispensed.
  • Participate in snow removal duty during inclement weather.
QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation, Training, and Experience:
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED required. A minimum of six months of experience servicing automobiles or related equipment.
  • Note:Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the class may be considered.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of automotive parts, components, and systems.
  • Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to make basic repairs to automotive equipment as specified in manuals and repair guides.
  • Ability to keep records of maintenance, fuel, and lubricant disbursements.
  • Ability to complete assignments by established deadlines.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
  • The work of this class entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment. Work requires exposure to the outdoor environment. Work requires strict adherence to instructions. Work is generally non-hazardous but failure to exercise reasonable care could result in injury.
